Hooge can be discovered in different ways: by exploring the diverse life of the Wadden Sea, going on a mudflat walk or following stories told at locations around the Hallig. The Hooge National Park House combines an exhibition with mudflat aquariums and a mudflat workshop. There are also cultural experiences and seven unattended bathing spots. Before your trip, you can consider whether nature exploration, exercise, stories or time for swimming should be the main focus.

Understanding the Wadden Sea and the Halligen

The national park exhibition at the Hooge National Park House explores the diverse life of the Wadden Sea, features mudflat aquariums and considers the Halligen in the context of climate change. This combines observing nature with the question of how habitats are presented. Hooge’s place in the region also has a specific point of reference: Since the end of 2004, the Hallig has been part of the development zone of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea and Halligen Biosphere Reserve. This zone includes five large inhabited Halligen: Hooge, Gröde, Langeneß, Nordstrandischmoor and Oland.

Mudflat workshop and mudflat walks

At the mudflat workshop in the National Park House, children and adults can explore nature and discover it through play. For people travelling together, this is an explicitly multigenerational way to engage with the surroundings. Outside, the National Park House offers mudflat walks to the Hallig of Norderoog and to Japsand. Each of these two named destinations gives the walk a specific point of reference; the mudflat workshop, by contrast, focuses on independent discovery indoors. If a mudflat walk is an important part of your plans, it is worth checking the current programme in advance.

Stories and culture on the Hallig

The Hooge Ghost Trail presents nine selected stories. Sylvia Kleudgen tells them atmospherically at their respective locations on the Hallig; the stories can also be downloaded as free audio plays via QR code. In this way, the trail combines local settings with an opportunity for discovery through storytelling. Guided tours of St. Johannis Hallig Church offer a different kind of cultural experience and can be arranged by appointment. If you would like to plan such a tour, arrange your visit in advance. Ghost stories, audio plays and a church tour offer different perspectives and help you shape the cultural part of your trip to suit your interests.

Swimming, getting there and choosing accommodation

Hallig Hooge has seven unattended bathing spots. Most are also equipped with beach chairs and mobile toilet trailers; these facilities may vary by season. Bear this in mind when planning if swimming is important to you. Hooge can be reached from the ports of Nordstrand/Strucklahnungshörn and Schlüttsiel. The experiences listed offer different points of reference when choosing accommodation: you can decide whether you want to focus your trip on the mudflats, stories, an arranged church tour or time at a bathing spot. Also consider which activities you want to arrange in advance: mudflat walks are included in the National Park House programme, while church tours are by appointment.
