Wangels lies between the Baltic coast and Bungsberg, surrounded by fields, meadows, hedgerows and small woods. Paths and the nearby Bungsberg Landscape Conservation Area add further contours to the landscape. When choosing accommodation, it helps to consider whether you mainly want to explore on foot or by bike, discover nature, or include traditions and culture in your trip.

Landscape and paths around Wangels

The village of Wangels is close to the Bungsberg Landscape Conservation Area. Its hilly landscape was shaped during the last Ice Age. In the surrounding area, hiking and cycling trails pass through fields and woods and follow small streams. Open landscapes and wooded sections meet here, and you can explore Wangels from different perspectives on foot or by bike.

A small alder swamp near Wangels lies within the Bungsberg Landscape Conservation Area. An alder swamp is an alder woodland on permanently wet, sometimes flooded ground. This damp woodland landscape differs markedly from the surrounding fields and meadows. Those interested in nature and landscapes will find a different subject here than on paths through open terrain.

Weißenhäuser Brök: Dunes and nature conservation

Weißenhäuser Brök is one of the largest dune areas on Schleswig-Holstein’s Baltic coast. In 1942, 57 hectares of the area were designated a nature reserve. Weißenhäuser Brök is also part of the Natura 2000 network as both a Habitats Directive site and a bird sanctuary. The nature reserve includes near-natural dry grasslands and heathland, which provide habitats for rare plant and animal species.

Visitor paths crossing Weißenhäuser Brök between the holiday centre and beach areas are fenced off from the adjacent sensitive dunes. This provides clear guidance for anyone exploring the paths through the area: the sensitive dune areas are separated from the visitor routes.

A special place to stay and Wangels’ traditions

The Ostsee Baumhaushotel in Wangels is considered a nature-oriented retreat, with 14 tree houses on a site of around 25 hectares and a two-kilometre nature trail. Development began in 2025; its operating status and facilities may change.

The Wangelser Gilde also shapes local traditions. It has existed since 1838 and preserves local customs. The traditional Whitsun festival includes a procession through the village, ceremonial shooting and an evening ball. This adds a cultural focus alongside the landscape and paths, distinct from the nature-related themes.

Culture across the wider Ostholstein destination

The wider Ostholstein destination offers other distinct cultural attractions. Every summer, the Eutin Festival stages different operas or operettas as open-air performances. The Ostholstein Museum in Eutin presents changing exhibitions as well as a permanent exhibition about Eutin during its heyday around 1800. In the municipality of Grömitz, Cismar Abbey hosts changing exhibitions; concerts are held in its vaulted hall during the winter season. These regional offerings complement Wangels’ nature and traditions with a different cultural perspective within Ostholstein.

Plan your journey

A route from Hamburg to Wangels runs along the A1 towards LĂĽbeck, takes exit 17-Neustadt-Nord, and then follows the B501 towards Neustadt. Journey times and traffic conditions vary. Wangels can also be reached by regional buses; a change in Oldenburg in Holstein may be required. As routes and connections can change with the timetable, check the connection for your travel date.
