Ahlefeld-Bistensee: Circular Trail, Reeds and Regional Delicacies
Accommodation in Ahlefeld-Bistensee
Ahlefeld-Bistensee offers a variety of natural features to enjoy during a stay: Lake Bistensee was formed by glacial activity, is about 2.5 kilometres long and one kilometre wide. Its extensive reed belt provides birds with shelter during the breeding season. Woodlands, the shoreline and reeds also shape the impressions along the official circular trail.
Lake, reeds and beech forest at Lake Bistensee
The official circular trail around Lake Bistensee passes through beech and hedgerow woodland, leads to viewpoints and runs along the lakeshore. There are several rest areas and bathing spots along the trail; it also includes an access route towards Ahlefeld. A historic draw well adds to the trail’s sights.
The trail sections each have a different character: in the woodland, beech trees and hedgerows take centre stage; at the viewpoints and along the shore, it is the lake. Rest areas and bathing spots offer additional stops along the circular trail. Local trail conditions may vary; check the current conditions before setting out.
Regional products as a distinctive feature
Another facet is the farm shop at Hof Bannick, right next to Lake Bistensee. It offers potatoes grown on the farm, seasonal vegetables, eggs, fruit spreads, egg noodles and egg liqueur, as well as selected regional foods. The range and sales arrangements may change seasonally, so check the specific details before your visit.
These are two different points of interest to consider when planning your trip, and they do not require you to follow the same itinerary.
The wider destination of Rendsburg-Eckernförde
Beyond Ahlefeld-Bistensee, the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde offers a broader landscape setting. It includes 55 kilometres of Baltic Sea coastline and four nature parks. The nature parks consist largely of nature and landscape conservation areas and provide habitats for a diverse range of animal and plant life. Alongside the lakeside and reed-fringed character of Lake Bistensee, you can therefore choose from regional themes that also include coastal landscapes and protected areas.
Numerous lake systems shape the Schleswig-Holstein Uplands in Westensee-Obere Eider Nature Park. The park is home to Lake Westensee, which covers around seven square kilometres and is a popular destination for day trips. The banks of the Eider there provide habitat for kingfishers. Dosenmoor, too, provides a habitat for distinctive flora and fauna.
For active holidays, the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde offers further options: a 1,000-kilometre network of signposted cycling routes and the 180-kilometre Nature Park Hiking Trail, which runs through the district’s four nature parks. The European long-distance hiking trail E1, marked throughout with a white St Andrew’s cross, passes through the Hüttener Berge, Brekendorf Forest and over the Aschberg. The hill is 98 metres high; in fine weather, the panoramic view from there extends to the Kiel Canal, Eckernförde Bay and Kiel. This gives you a choice of different landscapes and route types when planning the rest of your trip within the wider destination.
Culture and regional food traditions also contribute to the district’s character. The old town of Rendsburg dates back to the 13th century and is still characterised by medieval buildings. Rendsburg’s Jewish Museum is housed in Schleswig-Holstein’s oldest surviving synagogue; the building is also a historic monument and a memorial. In addition to its museum grounds, the Molfsee Open-Air Museum includes a historic fairground with two carousels, a swing boat and a strongman game, as well as a large playground.
In Eckernförde, smoking sprats and other small fish is part of the regional tradition; the famous “Kieler Sprotten” actually come from the fishing town of Eckernförde. The town also has a four-kilometre-long white sandy beach. These regional highlights offer a different focus from Lake Bistensee and its circular trail, and can help you decide on the mix of nature, culture and food you want for your trip.
