Hohn brings together Lake Hohner See and its birdlife, a ferry crossing of the Eider, cycling and walking routes, and a remarkable village history. Nature watching, outdoor activity and culture each offer a different focus, from the autumn migration of birds to exhibitions in the old railway station and historic furnishings in St. Mary’s Church. This gives you more than one way to shape your stay when planning your trip.

Lake Hohner See and Wildlife

Lake Hohner See is considered the last remaining shallow-water lake on geest terrain. Together with Königsmoor and Hartshooper Moor, it is part of a nature reserve. Numerous bird species find breeding and resting habitats here; in autumn, thousands of migratory birds gather at the lake before flying south. Autumn is therefore a particularly appealing time for anyone who wants to watch the bird migration.

The otter enclosure offers the chance to see young otters from an observation platform. Wild otters may also be spotted in the surrounding rivers, streams and ditches, as well as at Lake Hohner See. This gives you two different ways to watch them: observing young animals from the platform, or possibly spotting wild otters in their natural surroundings.

By Ferry and Along the Cycling and Walking Route

The Hohn ferry crosses the Eider for pedestrians and cyclists in a natural setting. If you plan to take the ferry, check the timetable in advance. Near Hohn railway station, the old railway embankment is used as a cycling and walking route. At the regional level, the signposted cycling network in the wider Rendsburg-Eckernförde destination covers 1,000 kilometres across the district. This distinguishes the local route near Hohn railway station from the wider regional network.

Village History, Exhibition and Church

The Hohn Village Museum is housed in the old railway station. Items donated by local residents document village life, and a database supports genealogical research reaching back to the 18th-century colonists. A Transall aircraft and a military history exhibition about Air Transport Wing 63 can also be seen at the same location. The old railway station thus brings village and family history together with an insight into the history of the air transport wing.

The more than 300-year-old St. Mary’s Church was consecrated in 1694. Its furnishings include a medieval baptismal font, a late-medieval crucifix, and carved elements on the pulpit and west gallery. The consecration and the older furnishings bring together different layers of history.

The village museum also includes the Backhuus, with its wood-fired stone oven. On scheduled dates, experienced bakers guide the baking of bread, cakes and pizza for local residents or as part of museum events. This activity takes place on specific dates; it is not a daily food service.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip

If you are looking for accommodation in Hohn, base your choice on the kind of stay you have planned: nature watching at the lake, getting active on the cycling and walking route, or exploring history at the museum and church each offer a different focus. These options can help you decide how you want to spend your days and guide your accommodation search according to the purpose of your trip.
