Maasholm between the Schlei and the Baltic Sea
Accommodation in Maasholm
Maasholm is situated on a peninsula in the Baltic Sea fjord of the Schlei; to the east, the municipality borders the Baltic Sea. The harbour, nature activities and the history of the fishing village offer different ways to shape your stay.
The harbour and water as your guide
Maasholm’s marina has 450 berths with electricity and water connections. Capacity and facilities may change during operation. Behind the municipal harbour, there is a canoe launch site on the beach where you can put a canoe in the water. Excursion boats are also part of the maritime scene: the MS Stadt Kappeln, MS Nordlicht and MS Schlei Princess depart from the Schumacher Bridge in Maasholm or from the harbour in Kappeln. As boat services and timetables may change, it is advisable to check the times before setting out on an excursion.
Cycling tours and nature experiences
The “Via Altona to Belgrade” cycling route starts and ends in Maasholm and is approximately 35 kilometres long. The guided cycling tours offered by the municipality take place during the summer months; dates and arrangements may change. They are usually 35 to 55 kilometres long and run mostly along quiet country roads through the Angeln landscape. Weather and wind can affect seasonal route details. This gives you different ways to plan: a named route of approximately 35 kilometres and guided tours that are usually between 35 and 55 kilometres long.
A two-kilometre nature trail leads from the hiking car park in Exhöft to the Maasholm Nature Experience Centre. The centre was established at a former rocket station close to the Baltic Sea beach and the Oehe-Schleimünde bird sanctuary. It offers seasonal nature experiences for tourists, school classes, groups and children celebrating birthdays; the programme may change. In the surrounding area, Jordsand leads visitors into the Schleimündung nature reserve from the birdwatching hut from April to October. Windsurfing courses are held seasonally during the German summer holidays, directly on the Wormshöfter Noor, a shallow bay between Maasholm and Wormshöft.
Fishing village, walking tour and local history
A walk through Maasholm takes in the harbour, the listed historic landing stages for Schlei boats, St Peter’s Church, the listed lifeboat station built in 1916, and small thatched fishermen’s cottages. The landing stages and lifeboat station connect the village’s maritime history with specific places in the village. A bookable guided tour introduces visitors to the history and maritime character of Maasholm; booking arrangements may change.
St Peter’s Church was built on 22 November 1952 as a simple seafarers’ church on a rise near the water. From there, the view stretches across the broad bays of the lower Schlei as far as Buckhagen, Rabel and Ellenberg. Another trace of the village’s history can be found at the Handwerkerhuus: the gallery opened in 1989 in the former brick stable of the listed town hall. A small fishing museum in the tourist information office tells the story of fishing in Maasholm.
Plan your stay around your interests
If you enjoy cycling, the approximate length of the Maasholm route and the usual distances of the guided tours can help you plan your day. If you would like to focus on nature, you can choose from the two-kilometre trail, seasonal programmes and limited-time activities in the surrounding area. If local history is your main interest, you can centre your visit on the walking tour, taking in the church, landing stages, lifeboat station and fishing museum. Choose your accommodation based on which of these trip ideas matters most to you; check seasonal dates and current timetables in advance.
