Rabel is located in Ostangeln between the Schlei and the Baltic Sea, on the narrow Schlei inlet of Rabelsund. The municipality borders the Schlei to the south and the Wormshöfter Noor to the east near Gut Buckhagen. At Rabelsund, the Schlei reaches a depth of 22 metres. Together with its location in the Schlei Nature Park, this gives Rabel a clear connection to the water. The town is officially recognised as a health resort.

Gut Buckhagen is a landmark in Rabel. Historic fishing weirs associated with the estate were used for fishing on the Rabelsund until 1905. The town’s history thus brings together the named estate and the former use of the Schlei for fishing. The connection between Gut Buckhagen, the Rabelsund and fishing is a specific historical thread running through the town.

Circular trail, fields and the Schlei shore

The “Along the Schlei Shore to the Rabelsund” circular trail is 5.03 kilometres long, rated easy, unpaved and laid out as a loop. It starts in Rabel and runs along field paths and lightly trafficked roads. On the way to the Rabelsund, the route crosses wide rapeseed fields. Its length, circular layout and surface give you several points of reference for planning your outing. As conditions can vary seasonally, it is worth checking them before setting out.

The Schlei shore near Rabel offers a different perspective: there, a small cliff affords a view across the water. The path through the fields and the view from the shoreline thus offer different impressions of the landscape. Walkers and cyclists can also enjoy the expansive scenery right by the Schlei.

In the wider Schleswig-Flensburg travel region, designated routes for cyclists and walkers run through the northern Schlei area, some along the shore and others inland. This broadens the view beyond the individual circular trail in Rabel: when planning, you can choose between a specific loop and routes across the wider region.

Excursions and cultural themes

Boat trips on the Schlei are also among the activities associated with visits to Rabel. Geltinger Birk is another excursion destination in this context. The many-kilometre sandy beach near Kronsgaard is likewise considered a worthwhile destination during a stay in Rabel. This brings together a walk, activities on the water and excursions to other destinations as distinct options.

Cultural themes are also part of the wider Schleswig-Flensburg travel region: Haithabu and the Danevirke have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since June 2018. The historic memorial site and Idstedt Museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. These destinations are part of the wider Schleswig-Flensburg travel region; they are not features of Rabel.

If you would like to give nature and history different emphasis on your trip, this distinction can help you choose the right search area. Should your stay focus mainly on the Rabelsund circular trail and the Schlei, or would you also like to include cultural destinations in the wider Schleswig-Flensburg region?
