Leezen: Au Lowlands, Lakes and Village Church
Accommodation in Leezen
Leezen brings together nature and culture: the Leezen Au lowlands are known for their species-rich wet grasslands, while the village church has a distinctive architectural and decorative history. The Neversdorfer See adds bathing spots, and the natural attractions are surrounded by opportunities for hiking and cycling.
Wet meadows and rare plants in the Leezen Au
The Leezen Au lowlands cover around 300 hectares between the Neversdorfer See and the Mözener See. Their species-rich wet meadows provide a habitat for rare plants, including orchids, cowslips and sedges, as well as the endangered bistort. The variety of plants gives the area its particular botanical richness.
Water buffalo are used to maintain the wet meadows in the Leezen Au lowlands. In large areas of the Leezen Au, adapted grazing by Galloway cattle, Fleckvieh cattle and Icelandic ponies also helps maintain the landscape. For nature enthusiasts, this land management is another aspect of the lowlands: alongside the plants, the way the meadows are managed also shapes the area.
Water, outdoor activities and village life
The Neversdorfer See has two bathing spots and a bathing island between them. Those interested in fishing can obtain a fishing permit for the lake from the municipal administration and at Hotel Teegen. As permit rules may change, it is advisable to check them before travelling.
Leezen offers opportunities for hiking and cycling around its natural attractions. The village square has a playground and seating areas for families, providing places to be active and take a break in the village. Local restaurants add to the amenities. If you plan to visit a restaurant, check the current options in advance.
Village church: bell tower, altar and organ
Leezen church is open to visitors for quiet exploration. The present brick church, built in 1870, retains a wooden, shingle-roofed bell tower from the 17th century, which is incorporated into the church building. The altar also combines a long history with striking forms: it dates from the mid-17th century, is Baroque in style and has twisted columns.
The organ has 879 pipes and is played both during church services and at concerts. Its musical range extends from classical music to jazz and gospel. The church grounds also feature traditional sandstone grave markers and cast-iron crosses from the 19th century. The bell tower, altar, organ and grave monuments make the church a varied destination for anyone wishing to include architecture, church furnishings and music in their stay.
