Discover Breitenburg: Castle history, woodland and trails
Accommodation in Breitenburg
Castle history, woodland scenery and trails for a range of activities define Breitenburg. The castle complex has its origins in the Middle Ages; nearby, trails lead through Breitenburg Forest and the Binnendünen Nordoe nature reserve. Cycling, golf and water touring are also among the possible highlights. When planning your visit, it is worth deciding first whether you want to focus mainly on the castle’s history, nature trails or an active outing.
Breitenburg Castle: History and visiting arrangements
Breitenburg Castle is one of the oldest preserved manor estates in Schleswig-Holstein. Its history began with a farmstead built by monks from Bordesholm in the mid-12th century on a geest hill in the marshland. The present-day castle developed from this farmstead. The complex took on its L-shape and current appearance in the 19th century.
Notable areas of the complex include the Hall of Mirrors, the Knights’ Hall, an art gallery, the old chapel, the crowned castle courtyard well, the Thorvaldsen Gallery and the library. The castle chapel is one of the first Protestant castle chapels in Holstein. The well also has a long history: the first castle courtyard well was built in 1592, and its present form dates from 1627. It is considered one of the most beautiful draw wells in Schleswig-Holstein.
The castle is still occupied by the noble family. You may not enter without arranging an appointment in advance; visits are possible only by prior arrangement. Be sure to arrange a visit before travelling. Bus routes 6193 and 6553 take you to the Breitenburg, Am Schloss stop. Check the timetable before your journey.
Woodland trails, inland dunes and views
Breitenburg Forest is wooded and gently hilly, making it suitable for walking and relaxation. Several established trails in the region connect Breitenburg, MĂĽnsterdorf and Oelixdorf; they can be explored on foot or by bicycle. When planning a day out, you can choose between a route through the forest and trails connecting the villages.
The Binnendünen Nordoe nature reserve extends across Breitenburg, Kremperheide and Dägeling. Its habitats include inland dunes, open pioneer vegetation on sand, heathland, grassland and oak forest. An established network of trails supports nature experiences and local recreation. The area’s varied landscapes make it a distinctive complement to the wooded trails.
The Nordoe Temple, a historic monument dating from the late 16th century, is also near Breitenburg. It stands on a small hill and offers expansive views over the surrounding area. The castle complex and the monument offer different points of interest: the former highlights the development of a historic complex, while the latter provides views across the landscape.
Cycling, golf and water touring
In Steinburg district, the Schloss-Tour cycling route passes the golf club on its way to Breitenburg, where Breitenburg Castle can be seen. The easy cycling route is 15 kilometres long, with a stated duration of one hour. It is named after the castle, which is considered a historic focal point of the Stör landscape and has shaped the region for centuries. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Schloss Breitenburg Golf Club lies between Breitenburg Castle and MĂĽnsterdorf. Its course has 27 holes and runs through the Schleswig-Holstein marshland, geest and hill country. Tree-lined avenues, hedgerows and moors are among the landscape features of the grounds. If golf is part of your travel plans, check the current course configuration before booking.
The Stör is another option for an active itinerary: within the Breitenburg administrative district, it is designated for water touring and canoeing. Water conditions and access arrangements may change, so check the latest information before your trip. The activities are quite different: the Schloss-Tour is a cycling route with a stated distance and duration, while the Stör offers a focus on the water.
