Discover Poyenberg: Nature and Festival Traditions
Accommodation in Poyenberg
Poyenberg is located in Aukrug Nature Park; wooded river and meadow areas, protected landscapes and the Aukrug Adventure Tour, which passes through the village, give it a distinctive nature and cycling profile. Local festivals are also part of the village’s history. This combination is appealing if you want to include both landscapes and culture in your travel plans.
Nature Reserves and Landscape
The Joachimsquelle Landscape Protection Area covers around 102 hectares and includes parcels of land in Poyenberg. It was designated under an ordinance issued by the Steinburg district on 28 August 1980. The protected area extends along the route from the village eastwards towards Dellen and also includes woodland there. The Poyenberger Kamp and Joachimsquelle districts border wooded river and meadow areas.
Cycling Through the Nature Park
The southern loop of the Aukrug Adventure Tour passes through Poyenberg. It is rated moderate and is mostly paved; the route also includes many single-lane farm tracks or trails. Along the way, the tour crosses river valleys, forests, hilly geest landscapes, lakes and small rural settlements. The scenery and settlement patterns change as you ride. In the wider Steinburg travel destination, marked cycling, riding and hiking trails also pass through the landscape of Aukrug Nature Park. The route’s difficulty rating and surface provide practical guidance when planning your ride. Route information may change; check the route before setting out.
Festival History and Zur Eiche
The Bully Club Poyenberg e.V. organized its first tent festival in Poyenberg in 1990. The Irish Folk Open Air Poyenberg took place in 2001. These two years mark different milestones in the local festival history.
A 2022 NDR report describes the Zur Eiche inn as a family business since 1928 and mentions its dance hall, Jägerzimmer (Hunter’s Room) and shooting range. It also describes the inn as the annual planning base for an Irish folk festival. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates in advance. Zur Eiche also has a boules court; ask about current availability before visiting.
