Klein Wesenberg can be explored through two distinct highlights: canoe trips on the Trave and a neo-Gothic church with historic features. This means that, alongside time on the water, you can gain a specific insight into the local architectural history.

Paddling on the Trave

Canoe trips are possible on the Trave near Klein Wesenberg, along the calm lower stretch of the river between Bad Oldesloe and LĂĽbeck. This stretch is considered particularly suitable for beginners and groups. As river conditions can change, check the local waterway information before paddling.

Klein Wesenberg has a canoe launch and landing point on the Trave, from which shorter trips upstream or downstream are possible. Check access and river safety before setting off. A longer route runs from Bad Oldesloe via Klein Wesenberg to Hamberge (Reecker BrĂĽcke): it is 18 kilometres long and takes about four hours.

This gives you a choice between shorter trips in either direction and a longer, several-hour route. So when planning your day, the direction is not the only factor to consider; you should also decide whether you want to spend around four hours on the water.

Neo-Gothic church and historic details

The church in Klein Wesenberg is a neo-Gothic building that was consecrated in 1885. Some furnishings from the previous church have been preserved, and the stained-glass windows are also protected. One of them, the altar window, depicts the Resurrection. The church’s construction date, preserved furnishings and window decorations each offer a distinct historical and artistic point of interest.

More experiences in the wider destination of Stormarn

Stormarn is located in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region between Hamburg and Lübeck and is ideal for day trips. Vast forests and moorlands, as well as numerous castles, estates and manor houses, characterise this wider destination. So if you plan to explore beyond Klein Wesenberg, you’ll also find nature and culture alongside paddling.

In Reinfeld, the “Rund um den Herrenteich” nature trail runs for four kilometres, with 16 stops directly along the edge of the “Oberer Herrenteich” nature reserve. The Herrenteich itself offers another point of reference: in the 12th century, Cistercian monks created it as an artificial pond by damming the Heilsau for fish farming. Its lakeside promenade has two waterside terraces and additional seating areas; a 3.6-kilometre circular path goes around the lower Herrenteich. The two routes differ both in length and in that the nature trail has 16 stops.

Ahrensburg Castle is also part of the region’s history: it was completed in 1585 and has served continuously as a museum since 1955. In the wider Stormarn area, you can pair nature trails with a place whose history is reflected in its construction date and long-standing use as a museum.
