Großvargula can be explored from several angles: St. Jacobi Church brings religious visual art into focus, Vargula Castle represents history of statewide significance, and wine growing is part of the town’s history. Outdoors, other highlights come to the fore: Großvargula is a starting point for hikes along the surrounding ridges, while cycling routes follow the Unstrut. For your trip planning, this means choosing between cultural discoveries and getting active in the landscape, rather than following a single prescribed itinerary. If your travel group has varied interests, you can consider these themes side by side and then decide what matters when looking for accommodation.

Church Art and Local History

A new altarpiece was installed in St. Jacobi Church in 1883, replacing the older painting from 1757. The painting by Professor Pfannschmidt of Berlin depicts the risen Christ with the grieving Mary before the empty tomb. The dates give the change of painting a specific historical timeframe. In addition, a booklet presents all 45 gallery paintings in the church. This places the individual altarpiece, with its clearly identified subject, alongside an entire series of gallery paintings as different ways to explore church art.

Vargula Castle is of historical significance throughout the state. This brings two different forms of cultural heritage into view: St. Jacobi, with its religious imagery, and the castle as a historically significant building. When choosing a cultural focus, you can consider whether you are more interested in visual art or the history of a castle.

Another strand of local history leads to wine growing. In 1954, Karl Simon Schwarz continued the tradition of wine growing in Großvargula. The Großvargula vineyard is run by the Landleben Foundation, based in Kirchheilingen. The first vineyard festival took place in June 2012; its varied program introduced numerous visitors to wine growing in Großvargula. Wine growing thus takes on several dimensions: as a tradition continued in 1954, as a working vineyard, and as the subject of the first vineyard festival.

Ridges, the Unstrut and Nature

The Unstrut Valley nature reserve between Nägelstedt and Großvargula features dry slopes and calcareous soils. These landscape features provide a connection with nature alongside the town’s cultural themes. For days spent outdoors, two different ways of exploring the area can be compared: Großvargula is a starting point for hikes up the surrounding ridges, while cycling routes follow the Unstrut. Your choice can therefore depend on whether you would rather set off on foot to explore the ridges or cycle along the river.

Another Historical Perspective in Unstrut-Hainich

The wider Unstrut-Hainich travel region offers another historical highlight in Mühlhausen: the town has 11 medieval churches and a preserved inner city wall ring with numerous defensive towers. Today, 2.2 kilometers of Mühlhausen’s inner, oldest city wall remain. In contrast to Großvargula, where St. Jacobi, Vargula Castle and wine growing offer different historical themes, Mühlhausen’s focus is on its ensemble of medieval churches and fortifications. This lets you weigh up different cultural highlights within the wider Unstrut-Hainich travel region.
