Discover Unstrut-Hainich: Treetops, Gardens and History
Accommodation in Unstrut-Hainich
The Unstrut-Hainich district is part of the Wartburg Hainich World Heritage region. Treetops and spring blossoms are found alongside medieval urban history, craft traditions and special plant collections. This gives you plenty of ways to shape your trip: enjoy nature in Hainich, take in Mühlhausen’s city walls, or spend time in gardens and museums. When choosing your accommodation, one simple question can help: would you like to focus your days more on forests and landscapes, or on towns, gardens and collections?
Experience Hainich from different heights
On the treetop path, you can walk 24 metres above the forest canopy of Hainich; from the treehouse, the view stretches across Hainich National Park. The tree tower offers a different perspective: if you have a head for heights, you can climb to a platform 40 metres above the ground. From there, the view extends across Hainich to the Thuringian Basin. The walk through the treetops and the higher vantage point offer different highlights for a day in nature.
The treetop path begins 200 metres from the Thiemsburg National Park Centre. The centre’s exhibition features films, large-format image panels, interactive displays and hands-on stations. A fully accessible media guide is also available; tablets and headphones can be borrowed. The National Park Centre has a large hiking car park, a dining facility, toilets and a public transport stop. Check the latest information about the facilities before your visit.
If you are interested in cultural history in the landscape as well as forest scenery, the Betteleichenweg offers points of interest along the way. The trail passes highlights such as the Ihlefelder Kreuz, the Eiserne Hand and Ihlefeld. In spring, it winds through blooming stands of wild garlic and corydalis. The seasonal flowers are a particular feature of this stretch of trail, while the historical sites add another theme to the nature experience.
Urban history, crafts and collections
Mühlhausen’s architecture and figures tell the story of the town. Today, 2.2 kilometres of the inner, oldest city wall remain; the inner city wall ring has numerous defensive towers. There are also eleven medieval churches. The Rabenturm’s 34.2-metre-high viewing platform offers panoramic views over Mühlhausen and the surrounding area. The wall, towers and churches show different aspects of the historic townscape, while the view from the Rabenturm helps you get your bearings across the town.
Museums also have their own distinct focus. The Thuringian Pharmacy Museum in Haus Rosenthal presents the history of pharmacy from the 18th to the 20th century across 276 square metres. The small museum at Opfermoor Vogtei displays original finds from archaeological excavations of the settlement and cult site. In Schlotheim, the Rope-Making Museum preserves a landmark of the traditional rope-making craft in a faithfully recreated spinning workshop. These places take you from pharmacy to archaeological finds and a locally rooted craft.
Bad Langensalza brings garden culture into your travel plans: the Rose Garden showcases almost 450 rose species and varieties on a former factory site covering 18,000 square metres. The Botanical Garden adds a collection of rare cacti and yuccas from South America. If you enjoy comparing plant worlds, you will find two distinct highlights here: the diversity of the roses and the South American cacti and yuccas.
Choose experiences to suit your stay
The Erlebnis-Draisine offers another way to experience the region. Route 1 crosses the 244-metre-long, 24-metre-high Lengenfeld Viaduct, with its eight arches. Check route availability before making plans. Along with the trails in Hainich and the attractions in the towns, the rail-bike experience expands your options across nature, activity and cultural history.
Plan your search for accommodation in Unstrut-Hainich around the places and themes you want to define your stay, rather than trying to fit every option into a single day’s itinerary.
