Forest, floodplain and nature trail
The Rhine Floodplain Forest Nature Trail was established in 1971 and is about four kilometres long. It features audio stations, interactive games and information panels. A hut along the nature trail introduces 19 native tree species that grow in the Rhine floodplain forest. This offers several ways to explore the forest: learn about tree species, read information, play games and listen to audio content. The approximate length gives the route a concrete framework for planning your trip.
The floodplain area near Wyhl also offers opportunities for recreational cycling on paved forest paths. When planning, you can choose between a nature trail with information and game stations and a cycling activity in the floodplain. In the wider Emmendingen travel region, the county’s cycle route network covers 900 kilometres, including 250 kilometres of signposted routes.
Local history at the church and Old School
Wyhl was first documented as a “villa” in 926. St. Blasius Parish Church is first mentioned in a document from 1275. Experts date the lower part of the church tower to between 1150 and 1180; the foundation stone of today’s parish church was laid in 1760. These dates mark different points in the church’s history: an early documentary mention, the older lower section of the tower, and the start of construction of today’s church.
The Old School is another historical landmark. Built in 1827, the school building is now a library and meeting place. Wyhl Public Library is located on the first floor of the Old School. The historic school building and its current use offer another perspective on local history.
