Knittlingen combines traces of its history and Faust-related attractions with a wine tradition and a variety of hiking options. When planning your trip, you can choose between local history, culture and outdoor activities: focus on one theme or combine them.

Half-Timbered Houses and Architectural History in the Town Centre

Numerous half-timbered houses have been preserved in the historic town centre. At St. Leonhard, two building phases stand side by side: the tower and nave date from the 13th century, while the Gothic choir was added in 1469. The foundations of the stone house also date back to the 13th century. These buildings bring different chapters of local architectural history to life.

Faust-Related Attractions, Archive and Vehicle Collection

The Faust Museum has been housed in the historic town hall since 1980. It presents material about Faust from literature, music, theatre and film. Since 8 June 2026, the museum has been closed for fire-safety work and lighting upgrades. Events are continuing, and the Faust Archive remains accessible. Check the latest information before your trip.

The Faust Archive is located in the former Latin school and hosts art exhibitions, concerts and literary evenings. Another collection is displayed at the Walters Oldtimer Museum: more than 260 vehicles, along with numerous exhibits relating to agriculture, crafts and rural domestic life. Faust-related attractions therefore sit alongside technology and everyday history as distinct cultural themes.

Hiking Routes with Different Starting Points and Landscapes

Route 14 of the Knittlingen Nordic Walking network starts at the car park by the sports ground. The VitalParcours “Walk & Wine” network comprises 23 routes covering a total of about 150 kilometres; six of them are in the immediate vicinity of Knittlingen. For finding your way locally, Route 14 therefore has a specific starting point, while the figures for the “Walk & Wine” network describe the larger scale of the route network.

A signposted panoramic circular hike in Freudenstein-Hohenklingen leads over the heights and through vineyards and woodland around the village. The Waldenserweg passes through Kleinvillars on its route from Großvillars to Schönenberg. The routes offer different highlights: the panoramic trail is characterised by its heights, vineyards and woodland, while the Waldenserweg links Kleinvillars to its route between the two towns mentioned.

Wine Tradition and Waldensian History

Knittlingen is known for its long wine tradition; as early as 1259, Pope Alexander IV praised its wines. Another local feature is the historic bakery near the Old Town Hall in Kleinvillars, which operates several times a week throughout the year.

Kleinvillars is a Waldensian settlement. The village’s Waldensian history is linked to Petit Villars, a settlement established south of Knittlingen in 1699. Along with the route of the Waldenserweg, this historical connection offers a distinctive way to explore the region, alongside the architectural history of Knittlingen’s town centre and its Faust-related attractions.
