Sternenfels: Views, hiking trails and the history of the sand farmers
Accommodation in Sternenfels
Sternenfels lies between Kraichgau and Stromberg and combines sweeping views with a distinctive local history: sand farmers, sand mills and the Lords of Sternenfels each add their own character. There are also hiking trails of varying lengths, viewpoints, an outdoor swimming pool and places to stop for a meal.
Views between Kraichgau and Stromberg
Schlossberg rises to 375 metres and offers views stretching from Kraichgau to the Vosges, the Palatinate Forest and the Odenwald. From the Sandberg viewpoint, the view extends across the eastern Enzkreis district towards the Northern Black Forest and the Rhine Valley. The two viewpoints offer different perspectives on the landscape: one with a wide panorama spanning several low mountain ranges, the other looking towards the Black Forest and Rhine Valley.
Hiking trails by length and focus
The family-friendly circular route “To Deer and Quiet Forest Lakes” is 4.8 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half. The Sand Farmers’ Trail is a five-kilometre cultural-history loop; eight information panels explore the history of the sand farmers. The routes are a similar length but have different focuses: one centres on forest lakes and an approximate walking time, while the other highlights history and its information panels.
A longer route is the Eppinger Lines Trail. This artistic and historical hiking trail, featuring installations, runs between Eppingen and MĂĽhlacker, passes through Sternenfels and is 41.9 kilometres long. Unlike the two circular routes, it connects different towns. When planning, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between a local circular walk and a longer section of this route.
The history of the sand farmers and the Schlossberg Tower
The GuG Museum explores the history and geology of the village of sand farmers, as well as the Lords of Sternenfels. The number of former sand mills gives the subject a tangible dimension: around 35 of them were once operating in Sternenfels. The Sand Farmers’ Trail also covers their history through its eight information panels, so the museum and circular trail offer different ways to explore a shared local theme.
Schlossberg Tower is a water tower that visitors can climb. It also houses the GuG Museum and has a playground and beer garden. This makes it a place that combines views, culture and somewhere to relax. If you would rather spend your time outdoors, you can treat the tower and museum as separate activities to combine with a hike or a visit to a viewpoint.
Outdoor swimming and places to eat
Sternenfels outdoor swimming pool invites visitors to swim and bathe, with its spacious sunbathing lawn. It is open seasonally. The SchloĂźberg beer garden is set among the vineyards and serves regional wines and light meals; it too is open seasonally. Check current opening periods and availability before your visit.
Sternenfels within the wider Enzkreis travel destination
The Enzkreis district is part of the Northern Black Forest region, lies between the Stuttgart and Karlsruhe metropolitan areas, and surrounds the independent city of Pforzheim. The district’s landscapes vary from one area to another: the Stromberg in the Enzkreis has wooded hills, gentle valleys and sunny vineyard slopes. The north-western part of the Enzkreis belongs to Kraichgau, where fields, meadows and vineyards shape the landscape.
Bus route 702 provides access to starting points for hiking and cycling routes through the Kraichgau-Stromberg landscape, connecting MĂĽhlacker and Oberderdingen-Flehingen. Timetables and connections may change, so check the latest information before travelling. If you plan to visit other destinations in the Enzkreis, plan the routes and connections for each separately. The excursions you actually plan and the location that best suits your stay can help you choose your accommodation.
