A natural monument, a small fountain house built from calcareous tufa, and Rococo floral arrangements offer different highlights in Engstingen. The Engstingen Kohltal Cross-Country Ski Trail adds a winter activity to the mix. The town’s story thus spans the designation of a natural monument in 1940, a structure dating from 1938 and church art featuring motifs from the year it was built, 1770. When choosing accommodation, you can decide whether to focus your trip on local history, artistic details or a winter activity.

Natural Monument, Architectural History and Church Art

The Kohlstetten Peace Lime Tree was designated a natural monument on 21 March 1940. This named tree therefore has a specific, dated connection to the town’s natural history. Another perspective on Engstingen is offered by the fountain house of the Kleinengstingen Sauerbrunnen spring: built in 1938 from Honau calcareous tufa, it remains unchanged to this day. Both its construction year and the stone used are known. Together, these two examples show different facets: a natural monument designation and a structure whose material and unchanged condition are documented.

Kleinengstingen’s St. Blaise Church has its own art-historical character. During the most recent renovation, two dozen of around 200 different Rococo floral arrangements were made visible again on the ceiling and gallery. They date from the year the church was built, 1770. The year therefore refers to the construction date and the origin of the arrangements; their rediscovery took place during a later renovation. The combination of floral Rococo decoration, ceiling and gallery gives a concrete impression of the described interior, without conflating the construction period with the renovation.

Winter Activity and Getting There

For a winter-focused stay, the Engstingen Kohltal Cross-Country Ski Trail is a distinct option alongside the town’s historical attractions. It starts either at the Kohltal lift or the Weinberg lift. If you want to make cross-country skiing the focus of your trip, there are two named starting points; the Peace Lime Tree, fountain house and church art appeal to other interests.

The route of the Swabian Alb Railway also helps with planning your journey: it runs from Gammertingen via Trochtelfingen and Engstingen towards MĂĽnsingen. The route description should be distinguished from current departure times and stops; check these before you travel. In the wider region, bicycles can be carried free of charge on all regular trains operated by the Swabian Alb Railway. Check the current passenger regulations before travelling if you plan to use this option.

More Cultural Attractions in the Wider Reutlingen Destination

In the wider Reutlingen destination, the Minster of Our Lady is the focal point of Zwiefalten, a historic monastery and pilgrimage town. It is one of the most significant examples of German Late Baroque architecture. Concerts take place in the minster every year; dates vary. Architecture and music offer two distinct points of interest for culture lovers, and the concert dates for your planned travel period can be checked in advance.

Lichtenstein Castle is another distinct attraction in the wider Reutlingen destination. It was built from 1840 to 1842 on the foundations of an older knight’s castle. The Hochgehträumt circular hiking trail leads from the castle along impressive scenic cliffs directly to Nebelhöhle cave. Please note when planning your journey that public transport does not go directly to the castle. The nearest bus stops are in Unterhausen (Oberhausener Steige), Honau and Traifelberg; from there, you can hike to the castle.
