In Eningen unter Achalm, art history, local history and the cultural landscape of the Swabian Alb plateau come together. Paul Jauch’s path to drawing, museums in the town centre and ancient trees of special significance give the town distinctive cultural and landscape features.

Art and local history

Paul Jauch (1870–1957) moved into the house in Eningen unter Achalm in 1913; it had previously belonged to his mother. That year, he gave up his job as a decorative painter to devote himself entirely to drawing. The Friends of Paul Jauch Association (Freundeskreis Paul Jauch e.V.) organises a special exhibition at the Paul Jauch Museum twice a year. If you would like to visit an exhibition, check the current event dates in advance.

The Eningen Local History Museum is located in the Grüner Hof, right in the town centre, at Eitlinger Straße 3. The building is one of the oldest houses in the town; Reinhold Rall founded the museum in 1990. Alongside local history, it also offers a culinary touch: recurring offerings on Sundays when the museum is open include refreshments in the “good parlour”. The Eningen women’s food-basket carriers serve guests coffee and cake. Check whether refreshments are available on the date of your visit.

Another art attraction is the permanent exhibition in the HAP Grieshaber Hall in Eningen, organised by the Friends of Eningen Art Trails Association (Förderverein Eninger Kunstwege e.V.). If you plan to visit the exhibition, it is worth checking the current presentation beforehand.

The programme of the Local History and Historical Society and the Cultural Office also brings together a range of interests: activities are offered throughout the year for all ages and include guided tours, creative activities for children, traditional festivals and special events throughout the year. Individual events vary from year to year.

Cultural landscape and outdoor activities

The pollarded beeches on the Eningen pasture were planted in the past to provide shelter for livestock in the fields. Today, they are striking landmarks of the historic cultural landscape of the Swabian Alb plateau and important habitats for insects and birds. The same is true of the lime tree avenues in the Eningen pasture area. This combination of historic land use, landscape and habitats makes the pasture a destination in its own right, alongside the museums.

There is also a disc golf course on the Eningen pasture. Disc golf is considered a sport for people of all ages and skill levels. If you would like to add an active change of pace to your stay, you will find a different way to explore the area here than through its exhibitions and local history.

The panoramic circular hiking trail “Around Eningen” offers numerous places to join and leave the route. Some sections are also suitable for older walkers. You can therefore incorporate the sections into your hiking plans in different ways; check the current trail conditions before setting off.

Think about which of these topics interest you most, and take the relevant dates and routes into account when planning your trip.
