Pleiskirchen – Holzland, Golf and Historic Churches
Accommodation in Pleiskirchen
Pleiskirchen combines the rolling landscape of the Holzland with a golf course and a rich architectural history. Churches in Pleiskirchen, Georgenberg, Nonnberg and Sigrün, as well as Klebing Castle, offer a range of historical perspectives. There are also plenty of options for active days: Pleiskirchen Golf Club has an 18-hole championship course, and the “Tour de Holzland” cycling route passes through Pleiskirchen.
Holzland, Golf and Cycling
Pleiskirchen is located in the rolling Holzland countryside. The Pleiskirchen Golf Club course lies in a scenic setting, with the nearby Inn Valley as its backdrop. From the course, you can see nearby villages and the mountain panorama of the Bavarian-Austrian Alps. The combination of an 18-hole championship course and wide-open countryside gives the golf offering a distinct sense of place, while the views extend beyond the course itself.
The “Tour de Holzland” offers a different way to explore the area. The 2025 cycling guide describes the route as passing through Pleiskirchen. The tour is aimed at sporty mountain bikers or ambitious e-bikers with a fully charged battery. This offers a practical guide when choosing a route: the stated audience is sporty, while the golf course provides a separate focus for your stay. Check the current route before setting off.
The landscape, championship course and cycling route appeal to different preferences; the churches and Klebing Castle add buildings with distinctive architectural features and histories from different periods.
Churches and a Castle from Different Periods
The Catholic parish church of St Nicholas in Pleiskirchen is a hall church of Gothic origin. It was given a Baroque makeover in 1631/32, and its tower top dates from 1882. The cemetery wall is also part of the town’s architectural history: it was partly renovated in 1983. St Nicholas thus reveals several distinct building phases, from its Gothic origins and Baroque transformation to later work.
Klebing Castle in Klebing is a three-storey, four-wing complex with an octagonal tower and decorative plasterwork. It was probably built on an earlier foundation in the second half of the 17th century; the castle chapel was built at the same time.
In Georgenberg, the Catholic branch church of St George was built in 1496 on an earlier foundation, which is thought to date from the 12th or 13th century. In Nonnberg, the Catholic church of the Assumption of Mary has a Late Gothic choir and nave; it was consecrated in 1427. Its tower is thought to date back to an earlier church consecrated in 1218. The older origins of both churches are part of the historical record, but remain qualified as conjecture.
The Catholic church of St Coloman in SigrĂĽn displays another architectural style: it is a Late Gothic brick hall church dating from the second half of the 15th century. Its tower has a stepped gable. Taken together, the churches differ in their form, materials and dates of construction; these features give each building its own character.
