Ornbau offers several ways to plan a trip: cycling routes with clearly stated distances, a Bible Garden outside the town walls, an Easter Fountain decorated every year, and a bathing area in the district of Gern. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests—perhaps a longer cycling tour, a seasonal tradition or time by the water. The attractions cover different themes and time frames, leaving you room to set your own priorities.

Cycling routes with different profiles

Two circular routes can first be compared by length: the Altmühlsee Cycle Route No. 8 is 38 kilometres long and starts in Ornbau. From there, it passes through Weidenbach, Merkendorf, Wolframs-Eschenbach and Mitteleschenbach before reaching Muhr am See. The Mönchswaldfüchse extra route is 36 kilometres long and is designed to take two to three days. Its circular route passes through Merkendorf, Mitteleschenbach, Ornbau, Weidenbach and Wolframs-Eschenbach. The stated distances are close to one another; an additional time frame is provided for the Mönchswaldfüchse route. For the Altmühlsee Cycle Route, by contrast, the starting point in Ornbau and the specific route are highlighted.

Another theme is Route 1, marked with green signs, of the three Meister (r)Ade(l)bar cycle routes. Ornbau is part of this route. Developed by the LBV AltmĂĽhlsee Environmental Education Centre, the routes lead to stork nests in the central AltmĂĽhltal. Information boards and interactive features share facts about the white stork. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider not only the distance and course but also whether you are interested in the nature-related themes of this cycling tour. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Bible Garden, Easter Fountain and bathing area

The Bible Garden is located in Ornbau, outside the town walls. A team of volunteers created it in 2011 with support from the town of Ornbau. Its origins are therefore clearly dated and linked to local community involvement. The Easter Fountain offers a different, recurring highlight: it is decorated every year on the Saturday before Palm Sunday in front of the parish church in Ornbau. If you would like to include this seasonal tradition in your travel plans, this date gives you a specific guide when choosing when to visit.

For time by the water, there is a bathing area on the AltmĂĽhl feeder canal in Gern, a district of Ornbau. Together with the cycling routes, the garden and the annual decorations in front of the parish church, this offers a variety of themes for a stay without requiring the same kind of outing. The choice mainly depends on what you would like to focus on: cycling, a place with cultural significance, an annual tradition or time at the bathing area.

More to explore in the wider Ansbach destination

Other places in the wider Ansbach destination also offer distinctive cultural and scenic attractions. In Wolframs-Eschenbach, the Literaturweg Franken (Franconian Literary Trail) is a 2.2-kilometre accessible circular route around the town’s fortifications. Its 15 information boards feature authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works explore Franconia. Here, a clearly stated route length goes hand in hand with a literary focus. The Löhe and History Trail in Neuendettelsau explores 19th-century history and the work of pastor Wilhelm Löhe in Neuendettelsau. It leads to sites in Neuendettelsau and to the churches in Reuth and Wernsbach, with an information board at each stop.

Those interested in collections will also find the Museum wiegen & messen (Weights & Measures Museum) in Königshofen, within the wider Ansbach destination. It displays more than 4,000 exhibits, including historic scales and their weights, cubit measures, folding rulers and vessels used to measure grain. The Frankenhöhe Nature Park offers a different sense of scale: it covers around 1,100 square kilometres and is the source area of the Altmühl, the Fränkische Rezat and the Zenn rivers. These destinations offer different themes from the places and routes described in Ornbau and may influence which priorities you choose for your visit to the wider Ansbach destination.
