Sommerkahl combines a long mining history with striking mineral colours and a cycling route that passes through the village. At its heart is the Wilhelmine Mine, where the history of copper, iron and manganese mining meets a 20-metre-high gneiss wall with green and blue ore coatings. The nature trail “Around Wilhelmine” adds another dimension. This offers different ways to plan your trip, from geological features and human use of the landscape to a stage of a cycling route.

Mining History and Mineral Colours

The first documentary mention of copper ore mining in the area of the Wilhelmine Mine dates back to 1704. For centuries, the mine yielded copper, iron and manganese. Geology also shapes the village: the gneiss wall rises to a height of 20 metres and is covered over a large area with green malachite and blue azurite, both secondary copper ores. The mine thus brings together historic use and striking minerals—an interesting perspective for travellers interested in raw materials and the composition of rock.

Some of the old tunnels have been opened up and illuminated. The slope above the mine entrance has also been secured, and an information building with toilets has been built. Advance registration is required for guided visits. If you are planning a guided tour, be sure to take this into account when planning your trip.

Nature Trail and a Human-Shaped Landscape

The “Around Wilhelmine” nature trail explores the landscape around Sommerkahl, which people have helped shape for many centuries, and invites locals and visitors to enjoy nature. The trail was created in 2006 in cooperation with the Spessart Nature Park, the Municipality of Sommerkahl, the Copper Mine “Grube Wilhelmine” Sommerkahl e.V., the Lower Nature Conservation Authority in the Aschaffenburg district and the Government of Lower Franconia.

The mine and the trail offer different emphases: mining and minerals take centre stage at the mine, while the trail explores the landscape and its long history of human influence. If you are interested in both, you can consider these perspectives separately when planning your visit and decide which topic to give more time to.

Cycling Through Sommerkahl

The Westerngrund–Heimbuchenthal cycling tour, formerly designated R6, runs from Huckelheim via Sommerkahl and Bessenbach and the Hohe Warte to Heimbuchenthal. Sommerkahl is therefore on the route described. For cycling travellers, the route provides a clear framework for planning a ride; check local route conditions before setting off. This makes cycling a distinct reason to visit, alongside mining and nature.

More Routes in the Wider Aschaffenburg Destination

Other cycling and hiking routes run through the wider Aschaffenburg destination. The Main Cycle Route follows the Main valley in the Aschaffenburg district, is well signposted and is considered family-friendly. The Kahltal-Spessart Cycle Route is also signposted and passes through the district’s landscapes. In the eastern High Spessart area of the district, four challenging cross-country routes are signposted as Bikewald Spessart routes. For hiking, the Spessart Trails 1, 2 and 3 run through the district; the German Hiking Association has awarded them the “Hiking in Germany” quality trail distinction four times. These regional examples vary in activity and character, from a family-friendly cycle route and challenging cross-country trails to award-winning hiking trails.
