Gefrees can be explored from different perspectives: a day trip to the Ă–lschnitz Valley, a described circular hiking trail and a walking and cycling path each offer a different focus. The history of the GrĂĽnstein Castle Ruins is another highlight. You can take any of these themes into account when choosing your accommodation and excursions.

Hiking and trails around Gefrees

The starting point for the Westweg day hike is at a rest area for hikers and tennis players on the grounds of the Gefrees Tennis Club. The Westweg is one of the Fichtelgebirgsverein’s five main hiking trails and forms the backbone of the day trip to the Ölschnitz Valley. This trail therefore focuses on the link between a main hiking trail and a specifically named day trip.

The Gefrees Circular Hiking Trail 1 offers a different way to find your bearings: from the Hügelwiese hikers’ car park near the St 2180, it heads east to Vorderer Kapf, continues via Knopfhammer, Leitenholz and Galgenberg, then returns to the starting point via the Kornbach crossing and the St 2180. A blue-and-white-marked hiking trail also runs between Gefrees and Hohe Heide in the immediate vicinity of Gefrees; benches along the trail invite you to take a break. Check local route conditions before setting out on a hike.

A 2.1-kilometre section of path was also built for pedestrians and cyclists between Gefrees and Knopfhammer. It connects the town of Gefrees to the Eger Cycle Route and the Wunsiedel district. The state road construction authority reported the construction in July 2025. As an addition to a day trip or circular hike, this path offers another way to include Gefrees in your route planning.

GrĂĽnstein Castle Ruins and nearby destinations

The GrĂĽnstein Castle Ruins offer a glimpse into the history of the area: around 900 years ago, a motte on the rocky ridge of the ruins provided residents with protection from robbers and other unsavoury characters. If you want to include a historical theme in your trip alongside hiking trails, this offers a distinct point of interest.

Bad Weißenstadt is just a few kilometres from Gefrees. The town is Bavaria’s 22nd spa town.

Within the wider Bayreuth destination

Within the wider Bayreuth destination, the landscapes vary across the district: Franconian Switzerland, with its varied, gentle scenery, characterises the western and southern parts. In the north, the Fichtel Mountains shape the landscape with dark forests and granite boulder fields. This provides a clear thematic guide for trip planning if you want to explore different types of landscapes.

Bayreuth district has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and cycle paths. Long-distance and themed cycle routes connect different parts of the district, passing through various natural landscapes and showcasing their distinctive features and tourist attractions. Local circular cycle routes make the network denser and allow for more localised route planning. At the Ochsenkopf, there are well-marked hiking trails, as well as the Alpine Coaster, a mountain cart track, the North and South gondola lifts, and downhill and singletrack trails. Winter brings its own highlights: the south-facing ski run is 1,900 metres long, with four groomed alpine ski runs also available. Some have snowmaking facilities and floodlighting until 10 p.m.

Cultural destinations round out the selection. Fantaisie Palace Park combines design elements from the Rococo, Sensibility and Historicism periods. The Garden Art Museum at Fantaisie Palace opened in July 2000 as the first museum in Germany at the time devoted exclusively to the history of garden art. At “Sophie at Night”, visitors can explore the three cave chambers of Sophienhöhle at their own pace, without a group tour; lighting effects and music accompany the experience. Access to Devil’s Cave is different: it can only be visited as part of a guided tour. These differences can help you match your cultural and landscape interests with the types of visits described.

Food and drink are also part of the wider Bayreuth destination. A distinctive feature of the district is its large number of beer gardens, most of which are associated with their own breweries, butcher’s shops or bakeries. Traditional inns serve Franconian-style dining rooms and regional specialities. Alongside trails, landscapes and culture, local food traditions offer another focus to choose from.
