Pottenstein combines a historic old town and a castle perched on dolomite with cave visits, hikes and outdoor rides. This makes the town an interesting choice if you don’t want to limit your stay to just one type of outing: the town’s history, nature and outdoor activities offer a range of options for planning your day.

Castle, Old Town and Devil’s Cave

In the area around Pottenstein, rock faces and pinnacles shaped by erosion, formed from Franconian dolomite, define the landscape of Franconian Switzerland. Pottenstein Castle, more than 1,000 years old, was built on a massive dolomite rock. It is a landmark of the town and houses a castle museum. The rock on which it was built makes clear how closely the striking landscape and the town’s history are intertwined.

The historic old town presents a different picture: it lies within the town walls and is characterized by Franconian half-timbered houses. The castle and the old town thus offer two different ways to explore Pottenstein’s history—the castle as a landmark with a museum, and the half-timbered streets within the walls. If you want to combine culture and scenery during your stay, you’ll find plenty to explore without having to devote the whole day to a single hiking route.

Devil’s Cave can only be visited as part of a guided tour. Tours last 45 to 60 minutes; the cave is well developed and easy to walk through, although it has a few steps. Of its total length of around 3,000 meters, roughly half is open to the public on guided tours. Highlights inside include stalactite formations and a complete cave bear skeleton. These time details help you plan the visit as a separate activity during the day.

A special option is the “Devil’s Cave Exclusive” tour, which includes geological explanations. It takes place from April to September on the last Friday of each month at 5 p.m. If you’d like to plan for this tour, check the date before your visit.

Hikes and Outdoor Rides

Two signposted hikes with different durations and distances are available for longer outings. The “Valley and Heights Tour” runs from Pottenstein via Schöngrundsee, Devil’s Cave, Schüttersmühle, the Klumpertal valley, Kühlenfels, Kirchenbirkig and Weidenloh, before returning to Pottenstein. It is about 16 kilometers long and takes approximately four hours. “To the Roof of Franconian Switzerland” runs from Pottenstein via Haselbrunn, Hohenmirsberg, Püttlach, Oberhauenstein and the Upper Püttlach Valley, before returning; the roughly 18-kilometer hike is listed as taking around five and a half hours. This makes it easy to compare the two routes based on the time you have available: the second is longer and, according to the stated duration, takes up more of the day.

There are two toboggan runs at Erlebnisfelsen Pottenstein. The Frankenrodel runs for 1,160 meters in a stainless-steel trough; the Frankenbob is ready to go in any weather. The runs therefore differ both in their construction and in the stated weather conditions. If you’d prefer to plan a single activity instead of a longer hike, you can take these differences into account when planning your day.

Water and a Break at Schöngrundsee

Pottenstein’s Felsenbad is one of Germany’s oldest outdoor swimming pools and has a swimming area as well as an idyllic beer garden. Schöngrundsee offers another way to spend time by the water: you can take a pedal boat out on the lake. However, swimming and fishing are not permitted there. This distinction is useful when planning if you want to treat swimming and a trip on the water as separate activities. There is also a free parking lot right by Schöngrundsee.

Consider whether you’d like to set aside a day for a hike lasting around four or five and a half hours, or would rather focus on the cave, the old town and other experiences. The information about the routes and the duration of the cave tour offers practical guidance, without requiring every trip to follow the same schedule.
