Dörfles-Esbach: Slate Museum and Art Library
Accommodation in Dörfles-Esbach
Two distinct cultural attractions take center stage in Dörfles-Esbach: the Slate and Brick Museum is devoted to roofing and the craft of roof tiling, while the art library offers regional art for loan. The museum also includes a faithfully furnished classroom from the 1940s. For families, this is a special opportunity not only to look at history, but also to experience a historical writing practice. The wider Coburg destination offers additional museums, historic places and trails.
Slate, bricks and regional art
The Slate and Brick Museum in Dörfles-Esbach displays exhibits on roofing with slate and bricks, as well as old tools and objects from the roofing trade. This gives visitors an idea of the materials used to roof a building and the tools associated with the craft. The classroom from the 1940s adds a tangible glimpse into school life at the time: children can try writing with slate pencils on slate boards. Visits to the museum are possible by appointment.
The art library in the Bürgerhaus, Parkstraße 1, in Dörfles-Esbach offers a different way to engage with art. It has original paintings and photographs by artists from the region available to borrow. While the museum displays historic craft objects and a former learning environment, the art library focuses on lending regional works of art. If you would like to visit the art library, check the municipality’s website in advance for current visitor information.
Culture and landscape in the wider Coburg destination
In the wider Coburg destination, the German Toy Industry Museum in Neustadt bei Coburg traces the history of the German toy industry—from home-based work to factory production. The collection includes an international collection of traditional costume dolls, with around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries. Hands-on activities and a museum trail complement the exhibits with things to do on site.
In Ahorn, the Alte Schäferei combines a Baroque estate sheep farm, built in 1713, with a collection of tools from farming and crafts, painted furniture and other records of the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The building’s architectural history and various historic objects come together here. The Panorama Trail is also in Ahorn: it is 7 kilometers long, takes 1.5 to 2 hours and is suitable for strollers. This makes it possible to plan a visit based on a specific time frame and whether the trail is suitable for a stroller.
In Seßlach, the old town is surrounded by a fully preserved town wall with defensive towers and three gates. From April to September, guided tours of the old town take place every Sunday at 2 p.m.; no registration is required. The Marterl Trail around Seßlach offers a different historical focus: on a walk, it introduces visitors to wayside monuments, their history and religious significance. The old town’s structures and the monuments along a trail thus offer different ways to learn about history.
Nature and culture add to the range of things to see and do in the wider Coburg destination. The Froschgrundsee in Rödental is a reservoir; cycling and hiking trails lead to and around it, and a biotope borders the lake. Schloss Rosenau in Rödental was the birthplace of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. A nature trail also passes by Lauterburg. Bus route 8301 goes to WildPark Schloss Tambach; from the “Tambach, Weitramsdorf” stop, it is just a short walk to the park. Check the timetable before setting off.
If you are planning a trip with children, the museum classroom offers a specific hands-on activity; if you would also like to spend time outdoors, you can consider the trails and nature destinations mentioned above.
