Coburg invites you to discover history in a variety of settings: the medieval Veste, the former city residence of Ehrenburg Palace and the Old Town each explore their own historical themes. There are also collections, a weekly market, and summer concerts and festivals. You can shape your days around what interests you most—architecture, art, local history or seasonal cultural events.

Market Square, churches and Coburg bratwurst

Coburg’s Market Square was laid out in the late 13th century and paved by the 16th century. At its center stands a monumental statue of Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, erected in 1865. The weekly market takes place there on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. You can buy fresh regional produce, flowers and handmade goods. Check the latest market details before your trip.

Coburg bratwurst is another local specialty: traditionally, it is grilled over a fire of pine cones. You can try it fresh off the grill in the Market Square; check locally to see whether it is available on the day of your visit. Coburg’s St. Moriz Church contains a Renaissance tomb of a duke and an alabaster epitaph for Duke Johann Friedrich the Middle. The Church of the Holy Cross was built in 1401 and adds to the picture of Coburg’s historic churches.

Veste Coburg: castle complex, art and connections to Luther

The origins of Veste Coburg date back to 1056; it is a medieval castle complex. During the Diet of Augsburg, Martin Luther stayed at the Veste for six months in 1530. The Hedwig Cup, which once belonged to Luther, is on display there. These historical connections sit alongside a wide range of collections: the Veste Museum includes a print collection, as well as collections of hunting weapons, glass, carriages and sleighs. The art collections include works by Cranach, DĂĽrer and GrĂĽnewald.

Coburg’s Natural History Museum offers a different focus. It is the largest natural history museum in northern Bavaria and has the status of a state museum. This means that a cultural exploration of Coburg can take in natural history as well as art and collections.

Royal residence history and urban spaces

Ehrenburg Palace served as the city residence of the dukes of Coburg from 1547 to 1918. In the 19th century, under Duke Ernst I, the palace acquired its present neo-Gothic façade, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The arcades in the style of the late Italian Renaissance on Coburg’s Palace Square form a kind of boundary at the foot of the Court Garden and invite you to stroll and linger. Here, you can experience architecture beyond the museum rooms.
