Wang draws attention to two very different architectural landmarks and to trails that connect the river landscape with history. Isareck Castle is situated near Wang on a hill at the confluence of the Isar and Amper rivers; the Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist features late Gothic architectural forms. There is also a circular hiking trail with historic stops and a cycling route variant that passes through Wang to join the Isar Cycle Path. When planning a trip, you can treat architecture, hiking and cycling as distinct areas of interest.

Isareck Castle and St. John the Baptist

Isareck Castle is situated between Volkmannsdorf and Wang on the steep slopes of the Isar, near the confluence of the Isar and Amper rivers. It is privately owned. Asmus Hälmayr built it from 1559 to 1570 for Duke Albrecht V as a four-wing complex. The castle includes St. George’s Chapel and an English-style castle park dating from the 19th century. Its architectural history thus brings together a 16th-century castle and a later park.

The Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist in Wang is a late Gothic hall church with a recessed polygonal choir and a flanking tower. The choir, which has multiple sides, is recessed relative to the nave. The choir’s roof structure dates from 1430 to 1433, and the nave’s from 1457/58; the cemetery wall is also medieval. The dates allow for a specific comparison: the choir’s roof structure is dated earlier than the nave’s.

Wang on foot and by bike

The circular hiking trail runs from Wang along former salt roads and through vineyards, past the battlefield of the 1313 Battle of Gammelsdorf and prehistoric settlements on the Isar and Amper, to Volkmannsdorf near Moosburg an der Isar. The Isar and Amper rivers meet there. On the return to Wang, the route passes Isareck Castle. The circular route therefore connects the river landscape with sites ranging from former transport routes to prehistoric settlements.

Cycling offers a different kind of connection: north of Moosburg an der Isar, an approximately six-kilometre variant of the Ammer-Amper Cycle Path passes through Wang and joins the Isar Cycle Path. When choosing between activities, you can use this distinction as a guide: the circular hiking trail passes historic and scenic sites, while the cycling route variant connects two named cycle paths. Check the latest route information before setting out. Parking is available at Gasthaus Schnaitl, SchĂĽtzenstraĂźe 7, 85368 Wang; check the local parking situation before your arrival.
