Kranzberg combines views across the Amper Valley with Baroque church architecture and a local history that can be seen at Pantaleonsberg. The local landscape also includes Kranzberger See in the Amperauen Landscape Conservation Area and St. Clemens Forest Church in the World Forest. When planning your accommodation, first decide: would you like to focus on Kranzberg’s local history, lake and valley views, or would you also like to include cultural attractions in the wider destination of Freising?

Pantaleonsberg: Valley Views and Local History

Pantaleonsberg rises about 40 metres above the valley floor and offers views across the Amper Valley. The panorama includes farmland, Tertiary hills, the Amper River, and marshland and oxbow areas. The hill is Kranzberg’s former castle hill. The chapel there has been dedicated to Saint Pantaleon for centuries, and the hill takes its name from the chapel. This place thus brings together sweeping landscape views and the history of the castle hill and chapel.

Church Architecture and History in the Town Centre

The Catholic parish church of St. Quirinus at Kirchbergstraße 10 is a listed Baroque hall church with two semicircular chapels. Georg Hieber built it from 1713 to 1716, incorporating the choir-flanking tower of the older Church of St. Erasmus. The construction dates and the incorporated tower offer two specific points of reference for exploring the church’s architectural history.

The exhibition on Kranzberg’s local history is in the Old Schoolhouse by the church and opens by appointment. Be sure to arrange your visit in advance. The town centre is also home to a historic court building dating from the 16th century, which is not open to visitors. The exhibition can be visited by appointment; the historic court building from the 16th century, however, cannot be visited.

Lake, Amper Floodplains and Forest Church

Kranzberger See is nestled in the Amperauen Landscape Conservation Area. The lake house has a pizzeria or beer garden, as well as a playground for children. As individual facilities may change, it is worth checking what is currently available before your visit. St. Clemens Forest Church is picturesquely situated in the centre of the Bavarian State Arboretum in the World Forest. The lake and forest church offer contrasting experiences: water and floodplain scenery shape the landscape here, while a church in the arboretum defines it there.

A Route Connecting to Freising

The Freising Way of St. James is a northeastern feeder route to the Munich Way of St. James. It begins at the Cathedral Hill in Freising, passes through Vötting and Hohenbachern, goes past a chapel and continues to Kranzberg. The route is about 11 kilometres long. Its clearly defined course makes the connection between these places a distinct part of travel planning, alongside the sights in Kranzberg itself.

Cultural Attractions in the Wider Destination of Freising

The wider destination of Freising offers a different focus on urban architecture, collections and contemporary art. Around Marienplatz, the historic old town features burghers’ and canons’ houses dating from the Gothic period through to the Baroque; a Marian column dating from 1674 also stands there. On Cathedral Hill, Freising Cathedral has a crypt and the Beast Column. The Freising City Museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history.

Schafhof is a centre for contemporary art in Upper Bavaria and hosts year-round exhibitions featuring works by international and local artists. Another option is the Weihenstephan Art Trail, which passes almost 30 contemporary works by regionally and internationally renowned artists across the campus. Its two circular routes each take a little over an hour. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh up whether Kranzberg’s landscape and local history or the cultural attractions in the wider destination of Freising better suit your travel plans.
