Discover Wiesthal: Glassmaking History and Cultural Trail
Accommodation in Wiesthal
Wiesthal in the Hochspessart is a glassmaking village with a history dating back to the late Middle Ages. The old glassmakers’ church in the village centre, a preserved mill and the European Cultural Trail offer historical points of interest; the nature discovery trail and mountain biking routes provide a different focus.
Traces of Glassmaking History
Wiesthal and Habichsthal are former glassmaking settlements that originated in the late Middle Ages. In the 16th century, glass production and trade brought economic growth and prosperity to Wiesthal. The Ruh or Mühlhansen mill is the only mill still preserved in Wiesthal today. Together with the old glassmakers’ church in the village centre, which is considered well worth seeing, it forms a special connection to the village’s history.
The Catholic parish church of St. Andrew also tells the story of the village’s long history: it was built in 1599/1600. The village also includes the district of Krommenthal. Wiesthal thus brings together historic buildings and districts with the glassmaking tradition that also shaped Habichsthal.
Nature Discovery Trail and Cultural Trail
Wiesthal railway station is on the Frankfurt am Main–Würzburg railway line. If you are travelling by train, check the current timetable. From the station, it is about a 200-metre walk to Station 6 of the nature discovery trail. Station 5 explores the topic of historic water meadows. For the warmer months, it describes an activity using a hand pump that lets visitors playfully experience how such a meadow works.
The European Cultural Trail “Habichsthal – Wiesenthal and Götz von Berlichingen” is about nine kilometres long and has five informative stations. As a circular route, it leads from Wiesthal halfway up to Habichsthal and finishes by passing through Hockenruhe, a district of Wiesthal. This brings together routes of different lengths: the short walk from the station to a nature discovery trail station and the longer circuit along the cultural trail.
Leisure activities in Wiesthal also include mountain biking routes and a water-treading facility. For planning your day, you can choose between historical themes, stops on the nature discovery trail, a longer walk and cycling. The specific attractions differ, but together they offer the opportunity to shape your stay around your own interests.
