Lohr a.Main: Castle History and the Main Cycle Route
Accommodation in Lohr am Main
Lohr a.Main combines castle history and forest culture with experiences along the River Main. Highlights range from a listed castle complex and a distinctive Good Friday procession to cycling tours, a seasonal boat trip and views from the Bayersturm tower. When planning your trip, you can choose the themes that you want to shape your stay.
Castle, Forest History and Snow White
The listed Kurmainzer Schloss castle complex has four towers. In the former castle of the Counts of Rieneck and the Electors of Mainz, the Spessart Museum presents the cultural history of one of Germany’s largest forest regions across more than 2,000 square metres. Its motto, “People and Forest,” provides a framework for exploring the Spessart, its history and the people who have shaped it.
Snow White is also one of the museum’s themes, including the Lohr figure and the famous mirror. Maria Sophia Margaretha Catharina von Erthal was born in Lohr Castle in 1725 and is considered a possible historical model for Snow White. On the second and fourth Sundays of each month from April to October, Lohr’s Snow White invites visitors to a fairytale hour at 3 pm in the Spessart Museum.
The Lohr School Museum offers another perspective on the history of education. Historic classrooms and old teaching materials bring the school history of the past century to life. The Insulator Museum displays a collection of insulators from around the world in a former transformer hut.
Old Town, Tradition and Views
Lohr’s Good Friday procession was first documented in 1658. It takes place every year on Good Friday and begins at St Michael’s Church in the old town. Thirteen life-size groups of figures depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ make their way through Lohr’s old town. In March 2026, the procession was added to Bavaria’s State Directory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The listed Fishermen’s Quarter is also part of the historic townscape. From the Bayersturm tower, you can look out over Lohr’s old town and the River Main, with views reaching as far as the Spessart. Close to town lies the Wöhrde cultural landscape, with wet meadows, tall-herb communities, springs, ponds, orchards and the River Lohr.
Cycle Routes, the River Main and Different Day Plans
Lohr a.Main lies on the Main Cycle Route and is a suitable starting point for a ride along this long-distance cycle route. The town is also part of Bike Area 1 of the Bikewald Spessart. Its forest and field paths range in difficulty and are mostly easy to ride, offering options for mountain bikers, touring cyclists and e-bikers.
From April to the end of October, the Maintal-Bummler departs for round trips from the Lohr Main riverfront between the two Main bridges. Another destination for water lovers is the Main-Spessart swimming pool: it has a heated 50-metre swimming pool, a large non-swimmers’ pool, an 89-metre giant slide and a diving tower with platforms up to five metres high.
When planning, it is worth taking the different timeframes into account: the procession takes place on Good Friday, the fairytale hour on selected Sundays from April to October, and the boat trips are also seasonal. All year round, Lohr Town Hall hosts concerts, theatre, comedy and shows.
