Discover Kirchroth
Accommodation in Kirchroth
Kirchroth offers two very different starting points for a trip: the “kiro” Fitness Island focuses on outdoor exercise, while St. Vitus Catholic Parish Church offers a glimpse into architectural history. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider whether these local attractions should be the main focus or whether other places in the wider Straubing-Bogen destination should also be part of your plans.
Exercise at the “kiro” Fitness Island
The Fitness Island is located on the site of the former playground behind Kirchroth Primary School. It comprises 17 outdoor fitness and exercise stations in total, divided into four areas: a climbing, coordination and agility island with four stations, an exercise equipment island with five stations, a strength island with three stations, and an obstacle course with five stations. This brings different forms of exercise together in one place.
The equipment can be used individually or in groups by children and teenagers, seniors, recreational athletes and people with disabilities. The different islands have their own focus, ranging from coordination and agility to strength and obstacles. The wide range of intended users is also a helpful point of reference when planning a visit with several age groups. Since the condition of the equipment may change, it is worth checking before your visit.
St. Vitus and Kirchroth’s architectural history
St. Vitus Catholic Parish Church was built in the mid-17th century, while the lower section of its tower is Gothic. It also has furnishings. The contrast between the period in which the church was built and the Gothic lower section of the tower gives it a distinctive architectural character: the Gothic classification applies to the lower part of the tower, while the church as a whole dates from the mid-17th century. For culturally minded travelers, this offers a distinct way to experience Kirchroth, quite different from the exercise facilities at the Fitness Island.

The Bavarian Forest, the fertile Gäuboden plain and the Danube shape the landscape of the wider Straubing-Bogen destination. Culture and pilgrimage also offer their own perspectives: Bogenberg is one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites that is still active today. The Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place at the pilgrimage church every year at Pentecost.
The Bogenberg District Museum explores the history of the Bavarian lozenges, from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen and their use by the Wittelsbach dynasty and in the Bavarian State Coat of Arms to their role as a symbol of Bavaria. Groups of ten or more and school classes can book individually tailored guided tours around Bogenberg by phone or in writing, including outside opening hours, if they book in advance. This booking requirement makes the tour especially relevant for a planned group or class trip.
Wiesenfelden offers two clearly distinct walking options in Straubing-Bogen. The accessible circular trail around Beckenweiher is 2.3 kilometers long and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs. Five information points with benches and panels cover the pond’s flora and fauna, its protected status and its history; the circular trail also crosses a 110-meter-long nature observation boardwalk. By contrast, the Kobelberg Nature Experience Trail is about 4.5 kilometers long, has nine stops, is suitable for strollers and is cleared in winter. These details help with comparing trail lengths and stops; wheelchair accessibility is specified for the Beckenweiher circular trail.
The WaldWipfelWeg in Maibrunn near Sankt Englmar offers another family-friendly perspective. This accessible walking trail runs among the treetops and reaches a height of up to 30 meters. The Nature Experience Trail includes interactive stations, climbing opportunities and animals such as alpacas, llamas, sheep and kangaroos. The WaldWipfelWeg also includes the one-of-a-kind “Haus am Kopf” in Bavaria, a house that stands entirely on its roof, with everything turned upside down. Express bus route 58 serves the trail hourly from the Viechtach and Bogen train stations; check the current timetable before traveling.
