Mindelheim can be explored in different ways: take a walk along the former town fortifications, visit the Textile Museum or explore the area around Mindelburg Castle. The routes through the Old Town, a festival with a long tradition and a pilgrimage trail each offer their own highlights—and give you different reasons to plan your stay.

Frundsberg Festival and Textile Museum

The Frundsberg Festival takes place in Mindelheim every three years. For ten days, it commemorates the former lord of the town, Georg von Frundsberg (1473–1528). According to the organisers, more than 50,000 visitors attend each edition. If you are planning a trip for the festival, the three-year cycle and ten-day duration are useful points of reference; check the specific event dates before making plans.

The Textile Museum Mindelheim offers a different perspective on the town’s history. It opened in 1986 to present Prof. Hilda Sandtner’s collections to the public. Since 2016, textiles, fine artistic needlework and valuable fabrics have been displayed, among other things, on the second floor of the former Jesuit college. At interactive stations, visitors can try their hand at crafts. The museum is therefore about both the works on display and the chance to have a go yourself.

Old Town and Mindelburg Castle

A walk along the former town fortifications reveals artistic details and romantic corners. The museums are about a kilometre’s walk from Mindelheim railway station, via Bahnhofsallee and the picturesque Old Town. The route thus links your arrival at the station with a walk through the Old Town before your museum visit.

Mindelburg Castle, also known as Schloss St. Georgenberg, stands above the Mindel Valley. During a guided tour of its grounds, visitors learn about the castle’s history and the lives of its former residents. The visit adds the story of a striking landmark above the valley to the impressions gathered in the Old Town.

Trails with different themes

For a walk in town, consider the route along the former fortifications. The Mindelheim Glückstaler-Runde follows in the footsteps of the nobility through the local countryside and comes with an audio guide. For a much longer outing, the Crescentia Pilgrimage Trail is almost 90 kilometres long. This circular route runs from Kaufbeuren via Ottobeuren and Mindelheim and back to its starting point. The trails range from discovering individual details in the Old Town to a long-distance pilgrimage route.

There are different ways to find your bearings in the Old Town, too. The Mindelheim Lauschtour audio tour is available in Easy Language and English. The “Altstadtplan – Sehenswertes” brochure includes signposted circular walks and an overview of the sights. You can choose between an audio guide and a printed overview for your exploration.
