Church History and Art in Woringen
The Evangelical Lutheran parish church in Woringen is the former Church of St. Mary. It was built after 1450 by the Möttelin lords and the local community. The history of the church reaches further back: four predecessor churches stood to the north of the present building, as excavations established in 1959. Documents from the later 14th century also mention an Upper Castle on Kellerberg and a Lower Castle, the Schlößle. These different historical traces offer various points of reference for exploring Woringen’s past.
A major turning point in the church’s history came on December 6, 1532, when the first Protestant service was held in the parish church. Different periods can also be seen in its architecture and furnishings. The Gothic spire is covered with brightly glazed roof tiles and probably dates from the time when the present church was built. Frescoes uncovered in the chancel in 1968 were dated to 1490–1500 and attributed to the Strigel workshop.
Other furnishings reflect different styles: the Neo-Gothic altar dates from 1892 and was made by Vogt, an artistic woodcarving workshop in Memmingen. The Baroque pulpit is one of the oldest in the district and was painted in 1661 by Johann Friedrich Sichelbein I. Visitors interested in art and architectural history can see different styles and periods side by side, from late medieval frescoes to the Neo-Gothic altar.
Educational Trail, Tennis, and Sports Facilities
The Woringen agricultural trail is about five kilometres long and marked with a green tree. Three dairy farms can be visited along the trail. Visits require advance registration. Visitors receive information about animal husbandry and feeding. If you’d like to include a visit, arrange your registration in good time.
The recreational area by the sports ground has facilities for football, skating, beach volleyball, and hockey, as well as a bocce court. Beginner and advanced training sessions are held at the beach volleyball court on Wednesdays. It’s best to check the schedule locally before making plans. There are also three clay courts belonging to the tennis club at the edge of the forest; for specific plans, ask about current availability.
There are a range of interests to choose from when planning your trip: church history and art, an agricultural trail, or various sports facilities. Consider which of these themes you’d like to focus on during your stay, and, when planning specific activities, allow for any required registration and check current schedules and availability.
