Hellersdorf combines expansive green spaces with a local history that can be rediscovered through archaeological finds. The Wuhletal, the Hönow Chain of Ponds and Kienbergpark define its green character; scenic views, nature play and an unusual place of learning add further highlights.

Wuhletal and Kienbergpark

Hellersdorf is surrounded by greenery, the Hönow Chain of Ponds and the Wuhletal. The Wuhletal is characterised by floodplain and meadow landscapes, as well as smaller bodies of water, most of them artificial, including the Wuhleteich pond. Shallow-water zones, some of them newly created, form part of a natural area that is deliberately protected so its flora and fauna can continue to thrive. Open landscapes and the protection of their natural diversity are therefore equally important.

The 60-hectare Kienbergpark offers space for leisure, play and experiences in nature. At its centre is the 110-metre-high Kienberg hill. The park is a public green space with unrestricted access; check the latest visitor information before your visit. Nature and leisure come together in this park, without limiting a visit to a single activity.

Views and outdoor paths

From the highest point of Wolkenhain, 120 metres above sea level, the view extends beyond central Berlin and the TV Tower to the countryside in Brandenburg. An elevator is available at Wolkenhain for visitors with reduced mobility. As current information about such facilities may change, check before your visit.

The Wuhlesteg, about 280 metres long, connects the districts of Marzahn and Hellersdorf. It offers views of protected vegetation and a species-rich range of fauna. The connection between the two districts and the views of nature are two distinct features of the footbridge: it is both a striking structure and a place from which to appreciate the diversity of the landscape.

Play, gardens and environmental education

On Kienberg, the “Wilde Welt” nature experience area gives children and young people 16,000 square metres of open space to run around and play independently in nature. For families who want to include nature play in their travel plans, this is a distinct focus alongside scenic views and landscapes.

At Kienberggarten, a gardening community cultivates around 600 square metres according to the principles of permaculture. Anyone interested is welcome to get involved. The environmental education centre on the western shore of the Wuhleteich offers a different focus: with a lakeside terrace and space by the water, it sits on a 20-metre-wide, 60-metre-long larch-wood platform. The platform was built for IGA Berlin 2017 at the western end of the Wuhlesteg. The centre serves as a place of learning for sustainable development and a central point of contact; its open space hosts talks and workshops.

Promenade and traces of the former village

The Hellersdorfer Promenade is a pedestrian zone between prefabricated apartment blocks. In spring, the cherry trees blossom in delicate shades of pink. This scene adds a very different impression of the district to its green landscapes: a promenade whose character visibly changes with the seasons.

The history of the former village is also tangible. Excavations carried out between 1983 and 1986 on the site of the former village of Hellersdorf, near what is now Cottbusser Platz U-Bahn station, uncovered the former village church, a cemetery, houses, a bread oven and everyday objects. The finds therefore include both places of communal life and evidence of daily routines. Those interested in local history will find a different way to discover Hellersdorf here than through its landscapes, views or outdoor leisure activities.

When looking for accommodation in Hellersdorf, your personal priorities can help you decide: wildlife watching, scenic views, opportunities for nature play or local history offer different ways to shape your stay. You can choose according to what you would like to discover in the area.
