Betzenweiler brings together an early mention in local history, places of religious significance, a share of a nature reserve and a cycling loop that passes through the village. This combination appeals to travelers who want to include history and activity in their travel plans. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether you want to focus more on historical sites, the annual festival or the cycling route.

A history with early beginnings and a fresh start

Betzenweiler was probably first mentioned as early as 817 under the name “Perahtramnilvillare,” when the village passed into the possession of St. Gall Abbey. The Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) brought a severe turning point: the effects of war and the plague killed almost the entire population. At the initiative of a Father von Stein, Betzenweiler was resettled by immigrants from Switzerland, mainly from the Inwil area. In the surrounding region, Betzenweiler’s residents are known as “Steinschweizer” (“Stein Swiss”); the name is associated with this resettlement. An early mention, a severe turning point and the subsequent fresh start give the village’s history a clear timeline.

Churches and chapels in Betzenweiler

St. Clemens in Betzenweiler is a Roman Catholic parish church; the parish was first mentioned in 1275. The church has four bells named St. Maria, St. Clemens, St. Antonius and St. Josef. This connects the parish’s long history with a specific detail of the church.

A Marian chapel was mentioned as early as 1693 in Bischmannshausen, a district of Betzenweiler. Today’s Bischmannshauser Käppele is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. Residents of Bischmannshausen built it in 1909 to replace the earlier chapel. The dates refer to different historical details: 1693 to the mention of a Marian chapel, and 1909 to the construction of today’s Käppele.

Nature and cycling as different highlights

The municipality of Betzenweiler includes part of the Westliches Federseeried/Seelenhofer Ried nature reserve, which covers a total area of 241 hectares. The Bussen-Blick-Weg offers another perspective: this 18.3-kilometer cycling loop passes through Betzenweiler. These are different highlights for planning your trip: the nature reserve represents the area’s landscape, while the loop offers an activity with a specific stated length.

Music festival and municipal barbecue and playground

Every year in August, the music and village festival organized by the music association takes place on the festival grounds directly in front of the hall in Betzenweiler. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

The municipal barbecue and playground facilities include a shelter with a barbecue area, outdoor furniture and a playground for younger visitors. For families with younger children, the playground is a useful local reference point. Associations, groups and individuals can rent the barbecue area for celebrations or events by applying to the Municipality of Betzenweiler and paying a fee. If you are planning your own event, coordinate your application and preferred date with the municipality.
