Late Gothic art and various routes through Tiefenbronn and its surrounding area are the main attractions. The parish church of St. Mary Magdalene offers an impressive introduction to art history, while walking and cycling tours provide a different focus. You can plan your days according to whether you are especially interested in altarpieces and architecture or would rather explore on foot and by bike.

Late Gothic art at St. Mary Magdalene

St. Mary Magdalene is a church founded through a donation and was first mentioned in the first half of the 12th century. It has five late Gothic winged altarpieces. The high altar by Hans SchĂĽchlin, dating from 1469, is considered one of the most significant winged altarpieces in southwest Germany. The large retable has wings painted on both sides, a predella and a superstructure, and is designed as an altar dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Passion. The Magdalene Altarpiece by Lucas Moser was created in 1431/32 and focuses on repentance, penance and conversion.

The choir also reflects different phases of construction and art: the Gothic choir dates from around 1350 and has a high ribbed vault. The valuable stained-glass windows were made in Strasbourg in 1370 and supplemented by Emil Wachter in 1976. The most important treasure in the treasury of St. Mary Magdalene is a Gothic tower-shaped monstrance by Augsburg artist Jörg Seld, dating from 1500.

Guided tours of St. Mary Magdalene can be booked in advance through the parish office or with Annemarie Gindele at 07234 4211. If you would like to visit the church as part of a guided tour, arrange this before your visit.

Walks and historical traces

The relatively short “Path of the Senses” leads from the sports ground to the cemetery in Tiefenbronn and was designed by Hede Leicht in 2017. Texts along the route invite you to take in your surroundings mindfully; trees, shrubs and flowers are also part of the path’s theme. This offers a different way to explore than a tour focused mainly on distance or physical activity.

Those interested in the town’s history can find background information about Gemmingen Castle and other buildings on the historic town trail. Plaques on the buildings, featuring historical images, offer glimpses into the past. The R 2000 hiking trail, by contrast, is a circular route that goes all the way around the Tiefenbronn district. The walking path, town trail and circular hiking route therefore each offer a different focus: sensory awareness, historical orientation or a circuit around the district.

Cycling for different abilities

The Chapel Route is a signposted, moderately difficult cycling tour from Tiefenbronn via Neuhausen to Hohenwart. It is suitable for ATB and MTB bikes. When planning your tour, bear in mind that some of the chapels are slightly off the route.

A longer, moderately difficult cycling tour, the WĂĽrm/Monbachtal route passes through the HagenschieĂź forest, follows the WĂĽrm and Nagold rivers, and goes through the Monbach Valley. It runs via Neuhausen and back to Tiefenbronn, and is suitable for experienced families with cycling experience. For an easier, shorter option nearby, try the Farm Tour: the route around Tiefenbronn lets you discover local farms and is intended for the whole family. The tours differ in their routes, difficulty and target groups.

When choosing suitable accommodation in Tiefenbronn, your interests can be decisive: art and local history offer a different focus from several cycling tours or a short walk.
