Neuenbürg tells its story in two very different places: in the castle, whose roots reach back to the Middle Ages, and in the Frischglück Mine, where you can experience mining history underground. The Enztal Cycle Route adds an active dimension. This lets you include culture, an underground tour and exercise in your travel plans.

Castle history across several eras

Neuenbürg Castle is a listed historic monument; its present wings date from the Renaissance, while its history reaches back to the Middle Ages. For a long time, it served the Dukes of Württemberg as a border bailiwick. Its construction history thus spans various historical periods. The walk-through theatre “The Cold Heart” offers insights into the region’s cultural history. The late-medieval St. George’s Church also lies along the route via Schlosssteige. History enthusiasts will find different ways to explore it here: through the building, a theatrical production and another historic structure along the way.

Underground at the Frischglück Mine

The guided tour of the Frischglück Mine covers three underground levels. One large excavation chamber measures 60 metres wide and 30 metres high—a concrete indication of the scale of this area. The mine offers an authentic picture of mining technology from past centuries. In the Neuenbürg mining district, iron ore mining dates back to Celtic times. The tour thus combines technical insights with a long history of mining.

Cycle and hiking routes with different itineraries

The Enztal Cycle Route is signposted along its entire length and has no significant climbs. Near Neuenbürg, you can temporarily leave the route to visit Neuenbürg Castle and the Frischglück Mine. This makes it easy to combine a cycling tour with two cultural attractions. If you prefer to travel on foot, you can take the jointly established Wilhelm-Ganzhorn Trail between Neuenbürg and Straubenhardt. You can use it as a circular route in Straubenhardt or continue on to Neuenbürg. The two tour ideas therefore differ mainly in the mode of transport and the route: a cycle path with detours, or a hiking trail as a loop or continuation.

The nearby Eyach Valley adds more opportunities for hiking and cycling in the region. The Eyach Nature Reserve also offers space for active exploration. The Eyach flows into the Enz between Höfen and Neuenbürg. This helps you consider excursions beyond the individual sights.
