Bodman-Ludwigshafen invites you to experience Lake Constance in all its variety: traces of stilt-house history, peaceful moments by the shore and active days on the water. Places of cultural and historical interest, hiking trails and natural lidos offer different highlights. You can decide whether you would like to focus your stay on nature experiences, physical activity or discovering the history of the area.

History and World Heritage by the Lake

The ruins of Alt-Bodman are freely accessible and offer views of the lake. Check local conditions before your visit. In the centre of Bodman is Bodman Castle with its castle park; the castle is privately owned by the Counts of Bodman. Nearby stands a historic wine press house, a half-timbered building once used for wine production. The wine press itself, formerly used to press grapes, can still be seen there.

Another historical landmark is the Bodman-Schachen site, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 as part of the “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” property. The World Heritage adventure playgrounds in the lakeside parks of Bodman and Ludwigshafen take up this theme: they are designed like pile-dwelling villages. This means that the history of pile dwellings is reflected not only at a designated World Heritage site, but also in the design of the lakeside playgrounds.

Lidos and Water Activities

The natural lidos in Bodman-Ludwigshafen offer swimming, surfing, wakeboarding, sailing, diving and boating. At the Bodman lido, you can swim in the lake and play volleyball. Canoes, kayaks (La Canoa), water bikes, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats and rowing boats are available for hire there. Rental availability may vary by season; check the current offer before your visit.

The Ludwigshafen lido has a listed wooden building with changing cabins facing the lake. Stand-up paddleboards and canoes are available for hire there seasonally. The lidos therefore offer different ways to spend a day by the water: alongside the water sports mentioned above, specific rental options are available in Bodman and Ludwigshafen. Some facilities may operate seasonally, so check which services are currently available before your visit.

Hiking Trails, Shoreline and Nature

An extensive network of hiking trails leads along winding paths to natural attractions and historic sites. Hiking options include a circular route up to the Bodanrück heights and a walk along the shore. The SeeGang premium hiking trail is also part of Bodman-Ludwigshafen’s tourist offering. There are different options to choose from: a route up to the heights, a lakeside path or a hike designated as a premium trail.

The Marienschlucht gorge is also nearby. From Bodman, it can be reached on foot via the hiking trail network; access is also possible via the trail networks of Langenrain and Wallhausen, by boat or by bus via Langenrain. After being closed following a serious landslide in 2015, the Marienschlucht reopened in March 2026. A new panoramic walkway leads through the rocky landscape. An information trail along the paths to the walkway provides information about animals, plants, geology, history and the importance of water. As sections of the trail may be closed temporarily, check current trail and service updates before setting out.

The Aachried nature reserve offers another way to experience nature: an information trail features ten stops with facts about endangered animal and plant species. In the lakeside parks, you can watch water birds on the lake. For a peaceful walk, early morning in spring or autumn is particularly appealing, when the quiet by the water invites you to take in your surroundings.

The Wider Region: Lake Constance District

The Lake Constance District is part of the wider geographical setting. It stretches along almost the entire northern shore of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg and extends into the Upper Swabian Hills and, to the east, the West Allgäu Hills. The landscape of the Lake Constance District is shaped by the lake and the adjoining hills, with fruit orchards, vineyards, meadows and forests. This diversity describes the region as a whole and complements the focus on the specific lakeside, natural and cultural attractions of Bodman-Ludwigshafen.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

If you mainly want to spend time by the water, the lidos and their activities offer a practical starting point. For cultural and historical discoveries, focus on the ruins of Alt-Bodman, the wine press house and the Bodman-Schachen site; for nature and physical activity, consider the Aachried and the various hiking options.
