Lauda-Königshofen combines winemaking with traces of its urban history and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. This makes the town interesting if you are interested in food and wine, culture and outdoor activities. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the different highlights: a wine and nature trail focuses on winemaking, a walking tour takes you through the historic old town, and around 30 hiking trails offer further opportunities to explore on foot.

Winemaking and food and wine

The Gerlachsheimer Herrenberg wine and nature trail is 3.6 kilometres long and has 22 stops. They cover modern winemaking and the history of Gerlachsheim as a wine town. The set route and its stops provide a clear focus: the connection between winemaking and local history is at the heart of the trail.

The Tauberfränkische Winzergenossenschaft Beckstein eG also offers an insight into the world of wine, with winery tours, cellar tours and wine tastings among its offerings. If you are planning a tour or tasting, check what is currently available before your trip. The wineries, the municipal administration and the Beckstein winegrowers’ cooperative from Lauda-Königshofen are all part of the Weinland Taubertal network.

Old Town and Architectural History

The Powder Tower is the last remnant of Lauda’s medieval fortifications and is almost 650 years old. The old-town walking tour invites you to explore the historic centre on foot; numbered information panels introduce individual sights. You can use the buildings and their stories to guide your walk.

The Tauber Bridge also tells the story of different eras: it was built in 1510/1512 with three round arches. It features a cross dating from 1593, a wayside shrine from 1644 and a statue of St. John of Nepomuk from 1732. The local history museum is housed in a Renaissance-era winemaker’s house dating from 1551.

In Gerlachsheim, the Holy Cross Church was built between 1723 and 1730 as a monastery church. It is considered a remarkable Baroque building in Tauberfranken. Together with the medieval fortification remains, the bridge and the Renaissance house, it illustrates the variety of historical highlights in Lauda-Königshofen.
