Röttingen combines wine traditions, historic buildings and summer open-air theatre. The town is located in the Tauber Valley and on the Romantic Road. When planning your stay, it helps to decide whether you want to focus on wine-growing and the landscape, the town’s history or a cultural event.

Brattenstein Castle and the Town’s History

Brattenstein Castle was first mentioned in 1230 in connection with the Lords of Hohenlohe. Since 1984, its castle courtyard and tithe barn have served each summer as the setting for the open-air theatre of the Frankenfestspiele Röttingen. In this way, architectural history and a recurring summer cultural event come together; dates and programmes may vary.

Seven of the 14 original towers of Röttingen’s city wall have survived; some are partly inhabited. The city wall and towers once served as fortifications and are now among Röttingen’s attractions. Together with the castle, they provide two distinct points of reference for the town’s history: the former fortifications and the historic seat of the Lords of Hohenlohe.

Wine, Routes and Local Experiences

Röttingen’s wine festival is held at Pentecost. In the winemakers’ barns and courtyards, you can enjoy wines from Röttinger Feuerstein, ranging from Silvaner to Tauberschwarz. The festival returns at this time each year; the programme and participating winemakers may vary. If you would like to plan your visit around it, check the details for the relevant year.

A wine walk leads from the historic old town through orchards and vineyards. Along the wine trail, information panels explain the vineyards, grape varieties and terroir, as well as aspects of prehistory and history. This lets you combine views of the landscape with insights into wine-growing. The Gaubahn Cycle Path offers a different perspective: it runs mostly along the former railway line, which once connected the Tauber Valley with the Main Valley, and passes through Röttingen. When planning, you can choose between a wine-themed route through orchards and vineyards and a cycle route connected with the former railway link.

Truffle cultivation is another distinctive local topic. A tour of the truffle plantation reveals its secrets. If tasting dates matter for your plans, check the current packages.

Gardens, Sundials and Wine Museum

Around 70 different culinary and medicinal herbs grow in the Paracelsus Garden, some cultivated and some wild. Various works by artist Herbert Mehler contrast with the plants through their sculptural forms. The garden thus brings botanical diversity and art together in one place.

The Sundial Trail is a circular route about two kilometres long, running within and around the city wall. Its route may change, so check the current route locally.

The Wine Museum is closed until further notice. It is dedicated to the history of wine-growing in Röttingen and the Tauber Valley; its exhibits include historic tools from various periods and a former winemaker’s costume. As the museum is closed, you should not currently plan it as an accessible attraction.

In the wider destination of Würzburg

Würzburg district is set within an unspoilt cultural landscape of vineyards, forests, expansive Gäu plains and the Main Valley. In Ochsenfurt, the historic old town is surrounded by an almost complete fortification system with numerous town gates and towers. The New Town Hall there dates from the 15th century and features a unique figurine and moon clock in its little lance tower.

Another seasonal option in the wider Würzburg destination is the Nixe old-town ferry in Ochsenfurt: from May to October, it regularly travels on the Main, offering both round trips and crossings. Check the current timetable before planning. This allows you to consider Röttingen’s attractions separately from the other local and landscape highlights of the Würzburg destination when planning your stay.
