Castle history, literature and paths through forest and valley offer different ways to explore Gomaringen: you can learn about Gustav Schwab and everyday life in earlier centuries, or focus on mills, water and nature. Gomaringen is nestled in the Wiesaz Valley; nearby are the recreational areas of the orchards, forest and Albtrauf escarpment. When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: culture at the castle, a walk in the forest or a cycling tour each lend a different character to your stay.

Gomaringen Castle and Gustav Schwab

Since 1998, members of the Gomaringen History and Antiquities Association (Geschichts- und Altertumsverein Gomaringen e.V.) have operated the Castle and Gustav Schwab Museum at Gomaringen Castle. Its educational program includes historical castle tours with information about the castle’s history and its lords. The exhibition rooms are in the oldest part of the castle, dating from the 14th century. A permanent exhibition focuses on life and work in Gomaringen in the 18th and 19th centuries; tours of the exhibition “Life in Gomaringen in the 18th and 19th Centuries” share insights into the working lives of Gomaringen’s residents.

Gustav Schwab’s life is also connected with the castle: he lived and worked there while in Gomaringen and served as a pastor and spiritual adviser in the town from 1837 to 1841. The castle continued to be used as a rectory until 1993. In the Schwab exhibition, you can follow his travels on a map of Württemberg. A touchscreen lets you view travel accounts, verses and historical images related to the places he visited.

Mills, Water and Discoveries

The educational program also explores the Wiesaz’s former uses. A walk along the stream leads to the remains of former mills; the tour explains old mills, mill channels and the beginnings of electricity generation. This activity focuses on the history of water use, while the castle tours center on the history of the building and the town.

The “Village Ralley for History Detectives” takes primary school pupils in grades 2 to 4 through Gomaringen in search of traces of the past. Activities include tasks, riddles, secret codes and hidden signs. The two activities have different focuses: the stream walk is about mills and the Wiesaz, while the Ralley explores historical traces in the town.

Forest and Viewpoint Loop or Cycling Route?

The Forest and Viewpoint Loop is a well-signposted circular trail just over 5 km long, running mainly through shady woodland. Its winding path follows the meandering Erdmannsbach stream; the elevation gain is a moderate 130 m. Starting points are the car park at the Buchbach recreation area and the Kohlgrube car park. When planning, you can consider the distance, elevation gain and predominantly wooded character together. The Gomaringen circular-trail network also includes six themed routes.

For a longer cycling trip, Gomaringen is a stop on Literary Cycling Route No. 6. The circular route is about 50 km long and runs from TĂĽbingen through Reutlingen and Pfullingen to Gomaringen and back to TĂĽbingen. Compared with the Forest and Viewpoint Loop at just over 5 km, it covers a very different scale. When choosing your stay, consider whether a local walk or the literary-themed cycling route is more important to you.

TĂĽbingen in the Wider Landscape

The wider Tübingen travel destination offers a broader view of the district: it stretches between the forested valleys of Schönbuch Nature Park in the north and the Albtrauf escarpment in the south. The landscape also includes the wooded areas of the Rammert and Schönbuch Nature Park, upland plateaus with expansive views, orchards and vineyards. The Neckar, Ammer and Steinlach rivers have cut through the district’s cuesta landscape, creating a varied region.
