In Albbruck, multi-day hikes meet trails through gorge and natural landscapes, as well as churches, a mill and village traditions. The experiences vary considerably in format: from the Albsteig to a circular hike, from a nature trail with its stations to distinctive buildings. You can start by considering what kind of days you want your trip to be centered around.

Hiking trails in different formats

The 83.3-kilometer Albsteig premium hiking trail begins in Albbruck and follows the Alb upstream to its source on the Feldberg. Depending on your fitness, you can hike the route as a challenging tour over three days or at a more leisurely pace over five days. Choosing between these time frames makes your personal hiking focus part of your trip planning.

The 13.2-kilometer Albbruck circular hiking trail takes a different route: it passes through Schachen, Tiefenstein and Hohenfels before returning to Albbruck. This helps you decide which type of hike you would like to make the focus of your trip.

The Albbruck Village Trail connects the central village of Albbruck with its five districts along a route divided into several sections. This offers a different focus from a single loop: the emphasis is on connecting the central village with the districts along a trail divided into sections.

The Studinger Steg also offers a distinct perspective on the landscape. It is a pedestrian connection from Hohenfels to Schachen. A steep path descends into the Albtal gorge; on the ascent heading west, views open up over parts of the Hotzenwald and Switzerland. The connection, descent and views each describe a different aspect of this trail.

Nature trail and landscape

The Mühlbachtal nature trail is located in the Mühlbachtal Schachen nature reserve. It runs for about 1.5 kilometers through the Mühlbachtal; at eight stations, the trail offers insights into how forests, open land, copses and bodies of water form, how they are used, and why they matter as habitats for animals and plants. The route thus combines a specific distance with themes related to different habitats.

This gives you a choice of different focuses for planning your trip: the Albsteig is a multi-day hike with two time options, the circular trail covers 13.2 kilometers and returns to Albbruck, and the nature trail focuses on eight stations about habitats.

Churches, a mill and a village festival

Albbruck is home to the Catholic St. Joseph’s Church and the Protestant Christ Church. In Birndorf, the parish church of the Holy Cross is a defining feature of the village: the imposing village church has a history stretching back almost a thousand years and features Romanesque architecture. The differently designed capitals of the two rows of columns are particularly striking. Capitals are the upper parts of columns; their varied designs give the building a distinctive architectural detail.

Another special feature is the Einungsmeister Mill in Unteralpfen. A large waterwheel turns on its west side; the lower floor contains a working millstone mechanism. The waterwheel and millstone mechanism represent two different parts of the milling technology and make the site easy to understand even without a lengthy explanation of its history.

The local calendar also includes the village festival on Eisenbahnstraße in Albbruck, which is regularly held on the first weekend in September. With the churches in Albbruck and Birndorf, the mill in Unteralpfen and this recurring festival, cultural and village-related themes complement your hiking plans. You can therefore tailor your stay to the mix of trails, nature and local history you want.
