Mitterfels: Discover History and Trails
Accommodation in Mitterfels
Mitterfels combines insights into history with opportunities to explore the countryside on foot or by bike. The castle museum, historic buildings, hiking trails and cycling routes offer a variety of experiences for your stay.
History at the Castle Museum and in the Townscape
Since December 1982, the Mitterfels Castle Museum has been housed in the approximately 200-year-old prison wing of the former district court and later local court. Its cells display workshops belonging to a village blacksmith, wheelwright, cobbler and goldsmith, as well as exhibits on rural living and farming. The building’s history and the exhibition come together here: alongside the building’s former use, the focus is on traditional crafts and everyday rural life.
The Hien-Sölde offers a different historical impression. The building is a late-medieval timber-block structure on a rubble-stone base, with origins dating back to 1436. St. George’s Church adds another historical and architectural dimension: it was built in 1734 in the late Baroque style. The castle museum, Hien-Sölde and church thus offer different ways to explore the history of the buildings and the town, spanning more than a single century.
Hiking Trails and Nature Experiences
Circular hiking trails around Mitterfels and Haselbach pass through forests, follow unspoiled streams, cross meadows and wind past fruit trees. The landscape includes wooded areas, open meadows and streams. This offers a variety of scenery for a day on foot, without requiring any single route to cover every type of landscape.
Three nature trails focus on local flora and fauna. Information boards explain ecosystems and historical background and encourage physical activity. If you would like to learn about the local environment as well as get some exercise while hiking, these trails offer a different focus from a walk where the main attraction is the route through forests, meadows and streamside scenery.
The circular hiking trails shown on the Mitterfels hiking map at a scale of 1:25,000 are generally also suitable for Nordic walking. The described Nordic walking routes start at the Panoramabad. Check the local route status before setting out.
Cycling Around Mitterfels
The Danube-Regen Cycle Path runs directly past Mitterfels and follows a former railway line into the Bavarian Forest. There are also circular cycling tours numbered 1 to 9, some of which follow the Danube-Regen Cycle Path. Tours 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 start at the Panoramabad or the old railway station. This offers two distinct ways to explore by bike: the cycle path passing Mitterfels and the numbered circular tours with the stated starting points.
When planning, it is helpful not to treat the routes as a single route: the circular tours use the Danube-Regen Cycle Path only in part, and the tours mentioned start at two different locations. If cycling is a deciding factor in your choice of accommodation, you can use these route details to guide your further planning.
Straubing-Bogen as the Wider Region
In the wider destination of Straubing-Bogen, the Bavarian Forest, the fertile Gäuboden plain and the Danube shape the landscape. A distinct cultural highlight is Bogenberg, one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites that is still active today. The Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place every year at Pentecost at the pilgrimage church on Bogenberg. These regional themes complement the picture of Mitterfels, whose highlights described here are the castle museum, historic buildings and routes for walking and cycling.
When looking for accommodation in Mitterfels, you can weigh these highlights against one another: Would you like to include historic buildings and exhibitions in your plans, spend more time on hiking trails, or take the cycling tours into account? Your answer can help you choose a place that suits your travel interests.
