Ahorn lies in a rolling hilly landscape with wide-ranging views. In addition to its network of hiking trails, the landscape is shaped by Ahorn Castle, the Old Sheep Farm with the Coburg Region Agricultural Equipment Museum, and several memorial sites. The landscape, historic buildings and educational museum activities offer different ways to shape a stay; you can plan which to combine according to your interests.

Castle and Old Sheep Farm

Joachim von Rosenau had Ahorn Castle built in the Renaissance style in 1555, after the Peasants’ War, on the remains of an older castle. The castle’s history thus leads to a place with several architectural layers: the older castle complex was followed by the 16th-century building. For travelers interested in architectural history, this sequence offers a particularly engaging way into Ahorn’s past.

The Old Sheep Farm, located in Ahorn within the wider Coburg destination, is a Baroque estate sheep farm built in 1713. The Coburg Region Agricultural Equipment Museum is located on the grounds and in the buildings of the former estate sheep farm of Ahorn Castle. Its exhibits include agricultural and craft equipment, painted furniture, and other artifacts from the former Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. At the museum site, the historic sheep-farm building and a collection offering insights into past working and living conditions come together.

Museum Experiences for Groups and Families

The museum offers educational activity programs for school classes and visitor groups by prior arrangement. Other options include guided tours, holiday programs and children’s birthday parties, as well as activities for outings, family celebrations and club events. A children’s birthday party is one example of an offering that can turn a museum visit into a shared program; advance booking is required for the activity programs for school classes and visitor groups.

Hilly Landscape and Hiking Trails

Opened in autumn 2013, the municipality of Ahorn’s hiking trail network comprises more than 40 kilometers of newly designated trails, including three circular routes. These figures describe a trail network, not just a single route. Within the wider Coburg destination, the Panorama Trail in Ahorn is 7 kilometers long, takes 1.5 to 2 hours, and is suitable for strollers. The trail’s length and duration provide a specific guide for a single hike, while the more than 40 kilometers indicate the extent of the entire network.

The historic Hohenstein landscape park offers a distinctive feature of its own: it was designed as a late Romantic park. Together with the wide-ranging views across the rolling hills, it offers a different theme from the area’s architectural and museum history. If you would like to explore Ahorn on foot, you can choose between the trail network described here and the Panorama Trail, whose duration is explicitly stated.

Memorial Sites in Ahorn

Carls-Ruhe is a memorial to Baron Carl Hartmann von Erffa, who died in a car accident near Dietersdorf in 1911. Another memorial site is the Stone Table. It was probably erected between 1820 and 1823 as a commemorative marker during the construction of today’s Old Road from Ahorn to Coburg. The date is uncertain.

A more recent marker was created in 2017, just beyond the Coburg Region Agricultural Equipment Museum “Old Sheep Farm.” The Old Sheep Farm trail marker was created as a sign of the connection with Ahorn’s partner communities of Eisfeld and Irnding-Donnersbachtal. The three sites reflect different occasions: commemorating a person, a marker associated with road construction, and a sign of connection with partner communities.

Culture in the Wider Coburg Destination

The German Toy Industry Museum in Neustadt bei Coburg offers a different cultural focus within the wider Coburg destination. It presents the history of the German toy industry, from home work to factory production. Its international collection of traditional costume dolls comprises around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries; hands-on activities and a museum trail add to the experience. By comparison, the Agricultural Equipment Museum in Ahorn focuses on agricultural and craft equipment, painted furniture, and artifacts from the former duchy. This makes it possible to compare different museum themes when planning a trip within the Coburg destination.

Ahorn as a Place to Stay

If you are looking for accommodation in Ahorn, you can plan your trip around the area’s specific themes: castle and museum history, hiking, or a combination with other cultural attractions in the wider Coburg destination.
