Bad Berneck in the Fichtelgebirge lies among seven mountains and combines wooded slopes with trails leading to viewpoints and historic sites. The spa gardens, old town and Franconian traditions add their own distinctive touches. When looking for accommodation, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on during your trip: hiking, local history or a culinary event such as Brezenwochen.

Hiking, views and trails through town

The Thiesenring is a hiking trail approximately 10 km long that loops around Bad Berneck. Numerous extensions and detours offer different ways to tailor the route. Along the way, the trail passes viewpoints and historic sites such as castles and mines, as well as an old trade route. The landscape alternates between forest and clearing, mountain and valley, so varied scenery is as much a part of the route as its destinations along the way.

All the listed viewpoints in Bad Berneck can be reached via hiking trails, and five of them lie along the Thiesenring. You can reach the castle ruins above town by taking a walk along a hiking trail that follows the historic Via Imperii trade route. This makes it easy to include viewpoints, historic sites and hiking in your daily plans without every walk needing to follow the same route.

Another way to discover Bad Berneck is the QR tour through town. At 25 locations, QR codes provide names, events and information. Scan them with your phone camera to access the content online while there. If you are planning cycling tours, the town’s tour portal offers suggested routes around Bad Berneck, along with elevation profiles and GPS data. The availability of individual routes may change; check the portal before planning your trip.

Seven mountains and a varied spa park

Hohe Warte, Mühlleite, Badleite, Schlossleite, Reichswarte, Königstuhl and Galgenberg are the seven mountains surrounding Bad Berneck. Typical mixed beech forests grow on their slopes, which also offer views of the town. This landscape makes the town a destination for hiking, without requiring the Thiesenring to be the sole focus.

The spa park brings together a range of attractions: it features a Kneipp educational trail, a historic Kneipp facility, a mini-golf course and a children’s playground. If you are planning a trip with children, you could include mini golf and the playground as activities in their own right. The park therefore complements the hiking trails and historic sites with another focus in town.

Church, festivals and Franconian cuisine

The Church of the Holy Trinity stands above the old town. This Margrave-era church was consecrated in 1800 and designed in the Neoclassical style. The town describes it as the region’s last Margrave-era church. Bad Berneck’s festivals and traditions include the castle festival, church fairs, the Sommerparkfest and Brezenwochen.

About two weeks before Easter, volunteers, associations and organizations traditionally decorate public fountains in Bad Berneck and its districts. Painted Easter eggs and other decorations turn them into Easter fountains. This seasonal custom offers a different way to experience the town than its historic buildings or hiking trails.

Brezenwochen takes place every year after January 6. During this time, local inns offer special menus featuring Franconian dishes. These include Krenfleisch with dumplings and “saure Zipfel”—sausages cooked in a vinegar broth. Menus may vary from one inn to another. If Franconian cuisine is an important part of your trip, the timing of your stay is therefore another consideration when planning.

Choose how to get here and where to stay based on your interests
