Hollfeld: Upper Town, Watchtower and Terraced Gardens
Accommodation in Hollfeld
Hollfeld combines a historic townscape with gardens on a steep slope and nature experiences in the Kainach Valley. In the Upper Town, Marienplatz and the historic settlement layout preserve the character of a burgher and mountain town. Other highlights include pilgrimages to the Church of the Holy Saviour, a late-medieval watchtower and seasonal blooms in the terraced gardens. Hollfeld offers a range of ways to plan a trip that combines local history and nature experiences.
Upper Town and St. Gangolf
Hollfeld’s Upper Town, with Marienplatz, still preserves the early medieval character of a burgher and mountain town, as well as the layout of a spur settlement. The historic townscape is more than a collection of individual buildings: its distinctive character also comes from the settlement pattern that developed over time.
A striking part of this heritage is the late-medieval watchtower of St. Gangolf. It is attached to the former church, which is now used as a cultural centre. The tower contains an old tower keeper’s apartment and a viewing area. Together, the church and tower bring different chapters of the town’s history together in one place.
Pilgrimages also shape Hollfeld’s religious tradition: pilgrimages to the Church of the Holy Saviour take place in May and June. They are enduring traditions and the only pilgrimages dedicated to the Holy Saviour in the Archdiocese of Bamberg. Those interested in the town’s cultural and ecclesiastical history will find a distinctive feature of the annual calendar here.
Town tours and orientation
Personalised, expert-led town tours with experienced guides are offered in Hollfeld throughout the year. They are one way to explore the town’s buildings and history with a guide. The tourist information office also offers a free leaflet, “A Walk through Hollfeld’s Historic Old Town.” It includes information and pictures of the buildings, providing a handy complement to what you see on site.
Another guided experience focuses on the plant life: a botanist leads a tour through a garden in Hollfeld and explains the plants. The tour lasts about 45 minutes and is often combined with a town tour. When planning, you can choose to focus on the town’s buildings and history or take a botanical tour—or include both themes in your travel plans.
Terraced gardens and nature in the Kainach Valley
The terraced gardens lie below Hollfeld’s town wall on the southern steep slope. They are home to plants adapted to a hot, dry climate. Visitors can see hardy figs and cacti, native orchids and the rare rock whitlowgrass. Roses and their companion plants are in full bloom in June and July. The plants on display may vary depending on the season and garden maintenance.
The children’s adventure trail in the Kainach Valley offers a different way to experience nature. Information boards cover local flora and fauna, while the activity stations include a barefoot path, sound posts and tree trunks to climb. On the way back along the trail, a goat enclosure lies beside the path. Hollfeld thus offers different ways to explore nature: plants and blooms in the terraced gardens, and information boards and activity stations in the Kainach Valley.
Tailor your stay to your interests
When looking for accommodation in Hollfeld, you can consider which experiences you would like to shape your stay. The town’s history, St. Gangolf and guided walks offer a cultural focus; the terraced gardens and children’s adventure trail provide other themes to include in your plans. These options can help you organise your interests without having to follow a fixed daily itinerary. If you would like to explore both the historic Upper Town and the plant life, you can include both in your travel plans.
