Markt Erlbach: History, Festivals and Forest Landscapes
Accommodation in Markt Erlbach
Markt Erlbach combines traces of its local history with recurring festivals and a forested setting on the heights of Frankenhöhe Nature Park. A preserved gatehouse, a distinctive pulpit in St Kilian’s Church and a museum add cultural highlights. The Erber Kerwa festival and the Christmas market also shape the annual calendar. This gives you different ways to plan your stay around your interests: history, events, a walk or the landscape of the nature park.
Local history in the gatehouse, church and museum
The lower gatehouse is a preserved part of Markt Erlbach’s former town fortifications. It was built in the 17th century and is privately owned. Another trace of history can be found in St Kilian’s Church: the Brenck pulpit previously stood in St John’s Church in Ansbach and was acquired by the people of Markt Erlbach in 1717. Its history connects the church with a specific chapter in the town’s past.
The Markt Erlbach Museum – History and Craftsmanship offers insights into dinosaur finds, the development of crafts and medical care, notable figures, and the history of Markt Erlbach and its surroundings. After almost ten years of renovation and conversion work, the museum was presented to the public on 28 July 2019. Advance registration is required to visit.
Festivals and discoveries throughout the year
The Erber Kerwa festival takes place every year in mid-August. Its traditions include the Kerwa bear procession. The specific dates vary from year to year, so check the dates before making plans. Another recurring event is the Christmas market in Kirchgasse, held every year on the third Sunday of Advent.
You can also discover the town while out for a walk, away from festival dates: there are works of art to find in various places around Markt Erlbach. This is a different way to experience the town than visiting with a specific cultural destination in mind. Together with the history of the gatehouse and St Kilian’s Church, these offer different reasons to get to know Markt Erlbach at your own pace.
Woodland landscapes and other regional highlights
Markt Erlbach lies in a scenic, heavily wooded area on the heights of Frankenhöhe Nature Park. The wider Neustadt A.D.Aisch-Bad Windsheim destination offers a broader regional perspective: the district is nestled between Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe Nature Parks and is particularly well suited to exploring on foot or by bike.
In Bad Windsheim, a tour of the Franconian Open Air Museum takes you through 700 years of everyday Franconian history. Among its buildings is the Bauhofstadel: built between 1441 and 1444, its late medieval roof structure spans an interior of about 360 square metres without supports. Another way to explore the region is the nearly 100-kilometre Main-to-Zenn long-distance cycle route. It runs through the district and connects Kitzingen with Fürth. The district-wide cycle network also includes themed routes, from leisurely rides to more challenging cycling.
Seasonal interests can also play a part in planning your trip. The Aischgrund Carp Gourmet Weeks take place every year from 1 September to 1 November at selected restaurants in the district; check in advance which establishments are taking part. In Neustadt an der Aisch, Aischgrund mirror carp is one of the local specialities. From September to April, it is served, among other ways, crispy fried or blue in broth.
