Hunderdorf combines a historic organ culture with a cycle route that passes through the municipality. This offers two distinct interests for your stay: churches and organs as cultural points of interest, and outdoor activity on the Danube-Regen Cycle Route. Check the current conditions before setting out on a bike ride.

Organs and Chapels in Hunderdorf

On 8 September 2024, St. Edigna in Hofdorf opened to the public with its historic Baroque organ. This is a cultural event with a specific date. Another organ is in the parish church of St. Nikolaus in Hunderdorf: it was built in 1982 by the Georg Jann company of Allkofen. It has 18 sounding stops and two manuals. The stops and manuals describe different aspects of the instrument; together, they give you a concrete impression of the organ in the parish church.

Hunderdorf is therefore home to two distinct organ-related attractions: the historic Baroque organ in St. Edigna Chapel and the instrument built in 1982 at St. Nikolaus. If you are interested in church music or historic instruments, both details can shape how you discover the town.

Cycling in the Municipality

The Danube-Regen Cycle Route passes through the municipality of Hunderdorf. This makes it a natural option if cycling is part of your travel plans. Before your ride, it is a good idea to check the current route.

Further Perspectives in the Wider Straubing-Bogen Destination

The wider Straubing-Bogen destination also offers a range of thematic highlights. The region is shaped by the Bavarian Forest, the fertile Gäuboden plain and the Danube. One cultural point of interest is Bogenberg, considered one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimage sites that is still active today. The Holzkirchen Candle Pilgrimage takes place at the pilgrimage church every year at Pentecost.

The Bogenberg District Museum explores, among other things, the history of the Bavarian lozenges: from the Counts of Windberg-Bogen and their later use by the Wittelsbachs and in the Bavarian coat of arms, to their status as a symbol of Bavaria. The museum also presents Bogenberg as Lower Bavaria’s Holy Mountain and as the site of one of Bavaria’s oldest Marian pilgrimages. Individually tailored guided tours focusing on Bogenberg are available for groups of ten or more and for school classes. They can also be booked outside opening hours with advance notice by telephone or in writing.

For families who want to combine exercise with information about nature, the wider Straubing-Bogen destination offers two different trails in Wiesenfelden. The Kobelberg Nature Experience Trail is about 4.5 kilometres long, has nine stations, is suitable for pushchairs and is cleared in winter. The accessible circular trail around Beckenweiher is 2.3 kilometres long and suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Five information points cover the wildlife and plant life, the pond’s protected status and its history; the circular trail also crosses a 110-metre-long nature observation boardwalk. The different trail lengths and themes can help you choose the right option for your plans.

Windberg and Bogen also add to the picture of the wider Straubing-Bogen destination. The medieval village of Windberg lies on a hill at an elevation of 420 metres and offers panoramic views of the Bavarian Forest mountains, the Bogenbach valley and the Danube plain. In Bogen, the “Culture Tour”, the “Beer Garden Tour” and the “Left and Right of the Danube” tour are day trips for families with children. When planning, you can choose whether you are more interested in landscapes, pilgrimage and culture, or a day trip to enjoy together.
