Biblis combines a Rhine riverside landscape with cycling routes, nature education and the history of Stein Castle. To the west of the town, the Steiner Wald and the ruins of Stein Castle offer opportunities for extended walks and cycling tours. At the municipal lake, an easily accessible nature education program adds to the range of options. You can choose the focus of your stay from outdoor activities, nature and cultural history.

The Rhine, Cycling Route and Landscape

The Hessian long-distance cycle route R6 runs through Biblis along the Rhine, passing right by Stein Castle and the Maulbeeraue. The route is a specific point of reference for anyone who would like to combine cycling with views of these two places. In addition, the Rhine riverside landscape west of Biblis offers opportunities for extended walks and cycling tours. When planning, you can weigh up whether you would prefer to follow a named cycling route or also make use of the wider opportunities offered by the landscape.

The municipal lake in Biblis offers an easily accessible nature education program. It provides a different focus from the routes and walks: nature education can be part of your plans alongside outdoor activities. The contrast between a specific long-distance cycling route, the more broadly described Rhine riverside landscape and the program at the municipal lake can help you weigh up your interests for your stay.

Stein Castle: History and Museum

From 1232, Stein Castle was the administrative center of the Bishop of Worms’s Stein district on the right bank of the Rhine. In August 1621, the decisive battle for the entire Bergstraße region took place near the castle. These historical milestones give the site a history stretching from its medieval administrative role to a later conflict over the Bergstraße.

A well-preserved Roman burgus dating from 365 AD is located on the site of the former Stein Castle. In Nordheim, a district of Biblis, the Burg-Stein-Museum Nordheim displays finds from the castle. Models illustrate its development from Roman times through the Carolingian period to its heyday in the Middle Ages. Visitors interested in several historical periods will find both archaeological finds and models showing how the castle developed.

The museum offers themed workshops for kindergartens, preschools and primary schools, developed in collaboration with the respective teachers. If you are planning such a workshop, coordinate the current arrangements with the museum.

Pickle Festival and Regional Excursions

The Gurkenfest is a traditional street festival held around the church and town hall. It was launched many decades ago to celebrate cucumber growing in Biblis. Live music was part of the program at an earlier edition. If the festival is relevant to your trip, check the dates for your travel period.

Beyond Biblis, the Bergstraße offers a broader regional perspective. In the wider travel area, Lampertheim, Bürstadt, Biblis, Einhausen and Groß-Rohrheim invite you to take a cycling tour through the Ried. In Heppenheim, the “Wein & Stein” adventure trail is about 6.9 kilometers long and has around 70 information stations. An autumn hike takes place along this route every year on October 3, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Along the trail, hikers can enjoy wines and food at five stations in the vineyards. Check the details before your trip.

The cultural history of the Bergstraße can also be seen at other places in the region. Lorsch is home to one of the best-preserved Carolingian buildings north of the Alps, located within the monastery; the monastery was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1991. In Heppenheim, Starkenburg Castle was built in 1065 to protect Lorsch Abbey. These destinations complement Biblis’s attractions with independent excursions in the Bergstraße region.

This lets you search for the kind of stay you want without presupposing a particular type of accommodation.
