Lindenfels combines castle history and regional festival traditions with trails through forests and countryside. You can plan your stay around a range of interests, such as historic sites in the town, a certified adventure trail or nature-focused attractions around the castle.

The Castle and the Town’s History

The castle’s construction history reflects two distinct phases of expansion. In the 14th century, the complex was expanded with the construction of the town wall. In the 15th century, the Romanesque inner castle was transformed into a fortress. If you would rather explore the history at several stops, the historic town walk features traces of the past, including the origins of the castle and the town’s nearly 600-year association with the Electoral Palatinate. The walk is also offered as a guided tour; times may vary.

The Lindenfels Museum opened in 1979 in the former tithe barn in the town hall courtyard at BurgstraĂźe 39. Its collections cover local history, folklore, agriculture, crafts and printing. The museum is expected to remain closed until spring 2027 for renovation work. This is important to bear in mind when planning your trip if you would like to include a museum visit.

The Lindenfels Castle and Traditional Costume Festival is another long-standing tradition, celebrated since 1904. It helps cultivate, preserve and bring the region’s cultural heritage to life, particularly the Odenwald’s traditional costumes and festival customs. Alongside the castle’s stone monuments, living traditions are also at the heart of the town.

Hiking Trails and Nature

The certified Li 6 adventure trail leads from Lindenfels down into the valley to Schlierbach, along the Gerichtspfad to Winkel and through the Buch to Schenkenberg. It then loops back to the starting point below the castle.

The Lindenfels Insect Nature Trail offers another way to explore local nature. It opened on 29 July 2020 and includes eleven informative stations. The signs cover habitats of particularly endangered insects and plantings that benefit insects, including orchards and wildflowers in the forest. The trail is on the Panoramaweg in the Lindenfels Schenkenberg forest, between the Hohl above Café Zur Ludwigshöhe and Schenkenbergstraße. Along the way, you can learn about specific habitats and plantings.

In the Castle Grounds: Garden and Refreshments

The medicinal herb garden is in the outer castle grounds, surrounded by historic walls from the outer defensive rings. Most of the plants are native to the region, and many put on a lush floral display in summer. The garden adds a seasonal nature perspective to the castle’s architectural history.

The Burgschänke is located at Lindenfels Castle, in the Geopark Information Centre. It is open seasonally and serves Odenwald home-style cooking, cakes, and hot and cold drinks. If you plan to stop there, take its seasonal opening into account and check the visiting arrangements in advance.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation Search

Lindenfels can be reached directly from Bensheim station on Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar bus route 665. The route runs between Bensheim and Reichelsheim. Bus route 666 connects Lindenfels with the municipalities of FĂĽrth and Neunkirchen. As routes and timetables may change, it is advisable to check the current timetable before travelling.

There is also a guide for arriving by car: Lindenfels Castle can be reached via the B 47, the NibelungenstraĂźe, to Lindenfels. Follow the signs to Stadtmitte to reach the BurgstraĂźe car park below the castle; from there, the walk to the castle takes about five to ten minutes. This is an approximate time, and parking rules may change.

Info.Punkt.Burg Lindenfels was set up as tourist infrastructure and a point of orientation for visitors, particularly hikers on the Nibelungensteig. Since 2021, an information centre for the UNESCO Geopark and the town of Lindenfels has been located in an old half-timbered house in the castle grounds.

If you are travelling by public transport, include the bus connections in your plans as well. This lets you choose Lindenfels as a destination based on the experiences that matter to you, rather than searching for accommodation based solely on a general impression of the town.
