Discover Neckarsteinach on the Neckar
Accommodation in Neckarsteinach
Neckarsteinach can be explored from several perspectives: the Neckar, art in public spaces and historic buildings. A riverside promenade, an audio-guided walk and the art trail offer different ways to get to know the town. There is also an educational church tour that actively involves visitors in the church interior, but it takes place only in the summer months and by prior arrangement. When planning your visit, it therefore makes a difference whether you mainly want to spend time by the water, view art or include a guided tour.
Along the Neckar
At the information centre in Neckarsteinach, you can find information about locations, topics and activities in the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geo-Nature Park, as well as about tourism in the town. This helps you find your bearings with regard to both local and regional interests. The historic ferry runs between Neckarsteinach, Neckarhausen and Neckarhäuserhof daily as needed and at the scheduled ferry times. If you are planning a crossing, check the ferry times in advance; daily service depends on demand.
The paved riverside promenade is five kilometres long and free of car traffic. The approximately four-kilometre audio-guided walk starts at the mouth of the Steinach, follows the riverside promenade along the Neckar uphill to the four castles, returns through the historic old town and ends at the information centre. In addition to the riverside section, the walk therefore includes an uphill stretch and the return route through the old town. The distances and route description can help you assess these two different options for a walk.
Art and historic sites
The Treidlerbrunnen fountain stands at Treidlerplatz, near the Neckar. Six works of art made from sandstone, wood, canvas and paint are installed along the Neckarsteinach art trail. The different materials give the route its own artistic character and invite you to take in each work individually. Another notable landmark is the ferry house: built in 1904, it is now a listed building. Neckarsteinach’s attractions thus bring together art in public spaces and a historic building with protected status along the Neckar.
Educational church tours in the Protestant church offer a different way to experience culture. Participants actively explore the church interior. Depending on the group, a tour lasts 30 to 45 minutes; tours take place only in the summer months and by prior arrangement. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, take into account both the seasonal restriction and the need to arrange it in advance.
The Bergstraße region as a broader travel destination
The wider travel destination of Bergstraße has its own landscape and culinary character: gentle vineyards meet the Odenwald. Riesling is the Bergstraße’s signature white grape variety, while Pinot Noir dominates among its red wines. Visitors can sample Red Riesling and other Bergstraße specialities directly from producers, in wine taverns or at wine festivals. Wine and landscape are therefore central regional themes in Bergstraße.
One example is the “Wein & Stein” adventure trail in Heppenheim. It is approximately 6.9 kilometres long and has around 70 information stations. The annual autumn hike along the trail takes place on 3 October from 10:00 to 18:00. Along the route, hikers can enjoy wines and food at five stations in the vineyards. Check the event details before travelling if you would like to include this date in your plans.
The hiking trails of Bergstraße also vary in length and format. The Burgensteig Bergstraße is 120 kilometres long and divided into nine stages. By contrast, the shorter “Wein & Stein” adventure trail combines a distance of approximately 6.9 kilometres with around 70 information stations. This comparison can help you decide whether you are more interested in a longer multi-stage route or a shorter themed trail.
