The district of Darmstadt-Dieburg encompasses landscapes ranging from the Hessian Rhine Plain and the Lower Main Plain to the Messel and Reinheim hill country, as well as the Vorderer Odenwald and the Sandstone Odenwald. The Bergstraße marks the transition between the Rhine Plain and the Odenwald. This offers several different focal points for your stay: protected nature, fossil history, historic buildings, and routes for walking and cycling.

Nature Among Ponds, Moorland and the Odenwald

The Reinheimer Teich nature reserve lies in the northwestern foothills of the Odenwald and is surrounded by meadows and fields. You can experience the area on a circular trail and from numerous benches. This combines exercise along the route with opportunities to pause and take in the surroundings. The Pfungstädter Moor nature reserve also offers its own setting for exploration: it consists of three sections, covers around 103 hectares and can be explored along designated paths. Its approximate area and division into sections give a concrete sense of this protected area.

Burg Frankenstein offers a different view of the Odenwald. It is a popular destination for day trips and a starting point for hikes. From the castle, the view stretches across the Rhine Plain and over the city of Darmstadt. If you are interested in routes and landscapes, the district also has an extensive network of well-signposted paths for hiking, walking and Nordic walking.

Fossils and Earth History

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Messel Pit is a fossil deposit with uniquely well-preserved and diverse fossils. They document the history of the Earth's development 47 million years ago. The visitor centre presents the history and significance of Germany's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. Messel Pit thus combines a remarkable natural heritage with insight into the fossils and their significance.

Castles, Museums and Regional History

Darmstädter Schloss in Groß-Umstadt developed from a former moated castle. In the late Middle Ages, it was expanded into a residence and was one of the seven former noble residences in Groß-Umstadt. At the Tannenberg castle ruins, the ruins and the view are the main attractions: the site lies east of Seeheim on a spur of the Odenwald at an elevation of around 200 m and offers views of the Bergstraße and the Rhine Valley. Burg Frankenstein provides another point of interest. Darmstädter Schloss tells the story of a moated castle becoming a residence; Tannenberg combines its historic character with views of the landscape.

Events are held at the Gruberhof Museum throughout the year. It also features a diverse exhibition on agriculture and crafts. If you would like to plan your visit around an event, check the date in advance. The Reinheim Railway Signal Box Museum was built in 1896 and served railway operations on the Odenwald Railway for many years. When it is open to visitors, the historic signalling equipment is demonstrated. Check the opening dates when planning your visit.

Cycle Routes and Guided Discoveries

Themed cycle routes in Darmstadt-Dieburg follow the small rivers Modau and Gersprenz; there is also the Genießer-Radroute and the Familienradroute. The latter runs from Erzhausen to Seeheim-Jugenheim and is around 40 kilometres long. This gives you a choice between routes that follow rivers and a named family route with specific start and end points. Its approximate length provides a useful guide for planning.

In Groß-Umstadt, from September to October, the town offers group tours on the theme of the fruit and wine harvest season, led by Rainer Bausch; the tours include a wine tasting. Group tours of the Kleine Bergstraße are offered there from January to December. The two offerings have different time periods and themes. If you are planning a tour, check the latest dates and booking details in advance.

Plan Your Stay and Accommodation

Would you like to focus on hiking and walking trails, cycling routes, the fossil history of Messel Pit, or historic sites and museums? A group tour about the fruit and wine harvest season may also be worth considering when planning an autumn visit. Then compare the location of your accommodation with the attractions you actually want to visit. This way, your search is guided by the itinerary you have in mind, rather than by a single keyword.
